BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women's soccer team looks to build off yet another successful year on the pitch as they welcome Binghamton to UB Stadium for the 2022 season opener on Thursday night. It is the first time since 2016 that the Bulls will open the season at home.
"This fall we will lean heavily on our experience," said head coach Shawn Burke. "Having seven athletes in their fifth year should be a huge asset come conference play. They have helped elevate this program and will be hungry for that final piece! Coupled with some dynamic new faces, this group can play soccer well into November."
Buffalo returns 18 players, including eight starters, from last season and will welcome five freshmen and three transfers to a team that went 13-4-3 and advanced to the semifinals of the MAC Tournament a last year.
The UB offense will look a bit different this spring as the Bulls will have to replace three of their top goal scorers from a season ago, including All-American Marcy Barberic who is now playing professionally in Iceland. Fifth year forward Taylor Caridi made her return to the pitch after an injury as a senior, scoring three goals and adding an assist. Senior Leah Wengender will continue to take on an attacking role, especially on set pieces, as she scored two goals to go with three assists last season. MAC All-Freshmen Team selections Arianna Zumpano and Alya Ruken look to build off impressive rookie campaigns in which they combined for five goals and five assists. Junior Olivia BIzzoni and sophomores Kaya Schultz and Kaylin Ricci will also look to take on more prominent roles in the UB attack.
The strength of the squad is no doubt in the veteran presence in the UB midfield and back line, led by Second Team All-MAC and Second Team All-Region honoree Payton Robertson who started all 20 games for the Bulls last season as well as fifth year Hannah Callaghan who continued to be a mainstay in the Bulls lineup, scoring two goals and adding two assists. The UB defense has a great deal of experience, led by fifth year players Tess Ford and Abbey Callaghan who also play a major role on set pieces. Senior Emily Lazenby, who started all 20 games last year, rounds out the veteran core.
In net, the Bulls will be led by All-MAC First Team selection Emily Kelly who continues to climb the UB record books as she finished the spring season with a 13-4-3 overall record, eight shutouts, 63 saves, a .0.97 goals against average and a .759 save percentage. Sophomore Emma Anderson and junior transfer Hanna Johnson will also look to split time between the pipes.
Buffalo will also lean on a talented group of newcomers to make an immediate impact this fall including freshman Katie Krohn and transfers Jasmine Guerber and Cashlin Copley. Ellie Simmons, Sarah Woods, Marissa Foster, and Ashley Reyes will also get their chance to help the Bulls in their first season in the blue and white.
The Bulls play the second game of the opening homestand on Sunday, as they host Big 4 foe Niagara at 7pm.
