
Bulls Split Week Action In Bethlehem

BETHLEHEM, PA – The University at Buffalo women's tennis team split their weekend matches, defeating Lehigh on Saturday, 6-1, before falling on Sunday morning to NJIT, 5-2. UB is now 8-2 on the season.
On Saturday, the Bulls got off to the quick start by earning the early doubles point. Freshman Azra Deniz Comlek and sophomore Nikoleta Antoniou-Karademitrou won first at third doubles, 6-4, while freshman Ambre Amat and junior Gabriella Akopyan won 7-5 at second doubles to give Buffalo the 1-0 lead.
All six singles matches were completed in straight sets with Buffalo winning five of the six. Sophomore Pia Schwarz dropped just three games overall at first singles as she came away with a 6-2, 6-1 win. Senior Emel Abibula followed that up with a 6-0, 6-4 win at second singles and Comlek then clinched the match at four, winning 7-6 (10), 6-1.
Akopyan won at third singles 7-5, 7-6 (2) and Amat won at sixth singles, 6-4, 6-2. Lehigh's lone win came at fifth singles.
On Sunday morning, Buffalo ran into an NJIT squad that improved to 8-3 on the year with its only losses coming against Penn, Rutgers, and St. John's.
The Highlanders took the early doubles point with wins at one and three, but Amat and Akopyan continued their red-hot play in doubles, winning easily at second doubles, 6-1.
UB picked up two wins in singles action and forced third sets in two other matches. Schwarz won again at first singles with a 7-5, 6-1 victory, and Amat claimed the victory at fifth singles, 6-4, 6-2.
Abibula overcame a 7-5 loss in the first set second singles by winning the second 6-4, but she dropped the third, 6-4. UB also lost in a super tiebreaker in the third set at sixth singles.
Buffalo returns home for a pair of matches next weekend beginning on Friday afternoon at 1pm against Wright State. UB will then host Binghamton on Saturday. Both matches will be played at the Miller Tennis Center.
