Volleyball Set To Host Binghamton In Season-Opening Exhibition Saturday

BUFFALO, NY – Fans will have their first opportunity to see the University at Buffalo volleyball team on Saturday afternoon as the Bulls will host Binghamton in an exhibition match at 1pm at Alumni Arena. Admission is free for those interested in attending.
The Bulls will have a new look this year as nine newcomers have joined the team, while the coaching staff is also new, led by first-year head coach Scott Smith, who previously served on staff, most recently as associate head coach. He has brought on a pair of assistant coaches in David Beck and Kaysie Shebeneck. Former head coach Blair Brown Lipsitz is continuing to work with the squad on a volunteer basis.
Five seniors return for UB including setter Scout McLerran, defensive specialist Hannah Watson, middle blocker Kristina Nieves and outside hitters Rachel Sanks and Polina Prokudina. Also returning from last year's team is sophomore defensive specialist Paige Beck.
The nine newcomers to the roster include a pair of transfers in junior middle blocker Lexi Nordmann from SMU and redshirt sophomore outside hitter Monika Simkova from Long Beach State.
Of the seven freshman on the roster, three are in the middle, including Olivia DeBortoli, Abby Leigh, and Courtney Okwara. UB also has setter Emma Puzausky, outside hitter Morgan Verheyen, and defensive specialists Melissa Masotto and North Tonawanda native Jenna Sonnenberg.
Last season, the Bulls went 18-11 and 10-6 in conference play, finishing fourth in the league, the best MAC finish in school history.
Binghamton went 5-20 last season and 3-9 in the America East.
UB will open the regular season next weekend when they host the UB Invite, welcoming in Alabama, Marist, and Colgate.
