MUNCIE, Ind. – The University at Buffalo men's basketball fell short on the road to the Ball State Cardinals on Saturday afternoon, 80-66.
Freshman Kavon Bradford had a career day at Worthen Arena on Saturday afternoon. The freshman finished with a career-high 18 points, 4 rebounds and a steal against the Cardinals. Ryan Sabol scored 14 points with 4 boards as Tyson Dunn added 10 points, 7 assists and 2 steals.
The Bulls struggled at the glass as the Cardinals finished with the 41-32 rebound advantage. Ball State used 13 offensive rebounds to score 17 second chance points. Buffalo finished with 8 offensive rebounds, but just 2 second chance points.
The typically well-disciplined Buffalo defense struggled on the afternoon as the Cardinals forced 29 fouls to their 19. Ball State went 26-for-36 from the line compared to the Bulls' 18-for-26.
Buffalo threw the first punch of the game as Noah Batchelor drained a hook shot in the paint to put the Bulls in front, 2-0. They managed to come out with a 6-2 lead, but the Cardinals went on a 13-1 run to take a 15-7 lead with 14:18 to go. The Cardinals kept their foot on the gas as they reached their largest lead in the game of 14 at the 8:48 mark leading 31-17. The Bulls crawled back and made it a single digit game down the stretch of the half. After trailing 31-17, Buffalo nearly doubled the points scored the rest of the way as they outscored Ball State, 19-10. Frederiks Meinarts drilled a three before the half to make it 41-36 at the half.
The Bulls continued to battle in the second half as a pair of Tim Oboh free throws in their first possession cut Ball State's lead to 41-38. That's the closest the game would get despite the Bulls keeping the Cardinals' lead to single digits for the majority of the half. Foul trouble hurt the Bulls as Ball State attempted 22 free throws in the half. The Cardinals put the game on ice down the stretch to come out with the 80-66 win.
The Bulls are back in action on Tuesday at Central Michigan. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. on ESPN+.
