BUFFALO, N.Y. – The University at Buffalo men's basketball team (7-14, 2-7 MAC) looked for back-to-back wins in Alumni Arena on Saturday against the Ball State Cardinals (10-11, 4-5 MAC), but the Cardinals managed to come out with an 89-76 win.
For the fourth time this season, the Bulls had five players score in double figures as they previously did so at Old Dominion (11/4/24), against Pitt-Bradford (12/3/24), and at Western Michigan (1/18/25). Anquan Boldin Jr. and Bryson Wilson led the way with 16 points each. Wilson recorded career-highs in points (16) and made threes (2). Ryan Sabol finished with 12 points with 2 threes as both Ben Michaels and Tyson Dunn scored 11 points.
At the glass, Noah Batchelor had 7 boards and 2 blocks. Defensively, Boldin Jr. tied his career-high in steals (3) while tying his season-high in blocks (2).
The Bulls attempted a season-high 39 three-pointers, but only managed to bury 8 on the night.
Buffalo gave the Cardinals a run for their money in the first half as the Bulls led by 10 with 9:05 to go forcing a Ball State timeout. Up 25-15, the Bulls were 9-for-18 (50.0%) from the floor. The Cardinals rallied and outscored Buffalo, 30-7, to close the half. Buffalo was 2-for-10 from the floor following Ball State's timeout. The Cardinals went to the locker room leading the Bulls, 45-32.
Second half scoring was tied as each team scored 44 points. A big difference in the contest was second chance points. Ball State scored 30 second chance points to Buffalo's 8. The Cardinals finished with 17 offensive rebounds, but the Bulls tallied 13. The Bulls managed to cut Ball State's lead down to single-digits several times but couldn't cut into the deficit more.
The Bulls are back in action on Tuesday, Feb. 4th as they travel to Toledo, Ohio for a matchup against the Toledo Rockets (13-8, 7-2 MAC). The game will tip-off at 7 p.m. on ESPN+. The Mid-American Conference will take a break from conference play next Saturday as Part II of the MAC-Sun Belt Challenge is scheduled. The Bulls will host the Georgia State Panthers (8-15, 4-7 SBC) at 2 p.m. on ESPN+.
