Bulls Host Northern Illinois on National Girls & Women in Sports Day at Alumni Arena on Saturday

BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women's basketball team (18-2, 7-2 MAC) opens the month of February with a pair of home games, beginning on Saturday as they host Northern Illinois on National Girls & Women in Sports Day, sponsored by Broadview Federal Credit Union, at Alumni Arena.
The game will be broadcast on ESPN+ with Brian Koziol (play-by-play) and Jared Zeidman (color) announcing and can be heard on ESPN 1520 and the Varsity Network with Jack Kreuzer on the call.
This is the 33rd overall meeting between Buffalo and Northern Illinois with the Huskies owning a 21-11 series advantage. The teams split the matchups with each team winning on the other's floor a year ago.
Buffalo picked up their fifth straight win in dominant fashion as they defeated Western Michigan 73-40 at University Arena on Wednesday. The 33-point win, UB's fifth straight, was the largest margin of victory in a Mid-American Conference regular season game since a 39-point win at Ball State on February 20, 2019. Three Bulls scored in double figures, led by Chellia Watson who scored a game-high 22 points. Fifth year guard Noelani Cornfield scored 16 points to go with seven assists and Kirsten Lewis-Williams also scored in double figures with 12 points, while Sitota Gines recorded a game-high seven steals.
The Bulls, one of two MAC teams ranked in the top 15 of the Mid-Major Top 25, are led offensively by Watson who is averaging 19.5 points per game. Lewis-Williams is averaging 13.5 points per game while leading the team in rebounding (6.1 rpg) and Cornfield is also averaging in double figures at 10.6 ppg, while leading the team and ranking 27th nationally in assists per game (5.3).
As a team, the Bulls lead the league in scoring margin (+18.4), field goal defense (.361), 3FG defense (.258) and turnover margin (+7.9) while also ranking in the top three in scoring offense (76.1), scoring defense (57.7), field goal percentage (.451), assists (16.3), steals per game (10.7) and free throw percentage (.780).
The Northern Illinois Huskies are 9-11 overall, and 3-6 in league play, after defeating Central Michigan 80-75 on Wednesday. The Huskies are led offensively by Chelby Koker who is averaging 12.8 points and a team-best 5.1 assists per game. Brook Stonebreaker is averaging just under a double-double with 11.5 points and 6.9 rebounds per contest and Alecia Doyle is also averaging in double figures (10.8 ppg). Freshman guard Lexi Carlsen leads the MAC and ranks 11th nationally in three-point percentage (.442). She has made a three in 18 of 19 games this season.
The Huskies lead the MAC and rank 21st nationally in three-point field goal percentage (.363). They are also second in the MAC and 44th in the nation in defensive rebounds per game (27.9) while also ranking in the top five in the league in field goal defense (.402), three-pointers made per game (7.2) and assists per contest (14.6).
