Bulls To Compete at Penn State National Open This Friday & Saturday

BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo track and field program is set to compete at the Penn State National Open this Friday and Saturday, one of the nation's premier meets of the indoor season. The Bulls have 34 student-athletes who met the qualifying mark in their respective events, 19 on the men's roster and 15 on the women's.
On the men's side, Tal Hamel qualified to compete in the 60-meter, 200-meter and 400-meter. Hamel has set personal records in all three events so far this season. At the SPIRE Midwest Invite last Saturday, Hamel ran a 47.77 400-meter dash, ranking fourth all-time in UB indoor history. The senior also set a personal record 200-meter time of 21.37 at the Al Campbell Invite that ranks second all-time in indoor history.
Jermaine Ewers is scheduled to compete alongside Hamel in the men's 60-meter dash. Ewers holds the sixth-ranked time in UB indoor history with a time of 6.83, set in 2023.
Michael Parks is expected to compete in the men's 60-meter hurdles. The junior holds the fourth-ranked time in the event in UB indoor history. Parks came close to his personal record at the Al Campbell Invite, finishing the preliminary round in 8.04 and the finals round in 8.05.
On the women's side, Zahra Amos, Akuot Kuany and Stella Kapp will compete in the women's high jump. Amos, the defending MAC Indoor Champion set an indoor school record last season with a mark of 1.80 meters, tying that mark at conference championships to take gold. Amos won the high jump last weekend at the SPIRE Invite, with a season best mark of 1.75 meters.
Kuany and Kapp made their marks on program history immediately as freshmen. In their debut with the Bulls, Kuany won the women's high jump with a mark of 1.75 meters, tied for fourth all-time in the indoor event. Kapp set her personal best in her debut too, with her mark of 1.70 meters falling at ninth all-time.
Kara Moran has had a strong start to the indoor season in jumping events. The sophomore broke her personal records in both the long jump and the triple jump. In the Bulls' season-opening meet, Moran was the top collegiate finisher in the long jump with a mark of 5.77 meters, ranking sixth all-time in UB indoor history. The sophomore also broke her triple jump record with a performance of 11.92 meters to rank eighth all-time in indoor history. Moran doubled back at the SPIRE Invite to break that personal record again, winning the event with a new personal best of 12.07, still ranking eighth.
The Bulls begin the indoor action at 11:15 am on Friday. The competition will resume at 10 am on Saturday. A full schedule for UB Track & Field can be accessed here.
