RALEIGH, N.C. – Members of the University at Buffalo Track & Field team participated in North Carolina State's Raliegh Relays this week, competing against national competition at one of the country's premiere early season outdoor meets.
Ryan Buzby headlined the weekend for the Bulls, setting his fourth school record of the year. Freshman Aleksandra Szulska also joined the women's all-time outdoor ranks, just four seconds shy of a school record.
DAY ONE
On the opening night of the competition, Buzby ran the men's 5000 meter in 13:52.63, breaking his previous outdoor record by over ten seconds. The fifth-year set three school records during the indoor season, now opening the outdoor season with that momentum.
Alex Hislop joined Buzby in the school outdoor record books, completing the 5000 meter in 14:25.86. The senior's new personal best now ranks seventh in UB outdoor history.
In the men's 1500 meter, school record holder Evan Hilbert finished 27th of 208 runners with a time of 3:45.18. Noah Brightman joined the all-time ranks with a time of 3:51.27, ranking tenth in all-time outdoor school history. Johann Matzal (3:54.80) and Gabe Watson (4:03.97) also competed for the Bulls.
Indoor season MAC Champion Jonathan Surdej set the tone in the field events for the Bulls. The graduate student placed eighth across a field of 44 competitors in the shot put with a throw of 17.06 meters. Graduate transfer Jenna Reid placed ninth of 36 competitors in the women's javelin throw with a mark of 41.00 meters.
DAY TWO
Szulska joined the school's outdoor record books on Friday night, completing the 5000 meter in 16:47.40. The freshman's time ranks second in UB outdoor history. Szulska placed 77th of 195 runners.
Brian Murphy placed third in the men's pole vault with a new personal record mark of 4.80 meters.
Freshman Emmanuel Sepulveda placed 13th in the men's triple jump with a strong season-opening mark of 14.33 meters. In the women's triple jump, Emily Tait placed 18th with a mark of 11.53 meters, as freshman Kara Moran finished 23rd (11.26m).

DAY THREE
Caleb Nickens opened day three for the Bulls on a strong note, placing 12th of 49 athletes in the men's hammer throw with a mark of 58.70 meters. Nickens' throw was less than two meters shy of his personal best that ranks third all-time in UB outdoor history.
Moran placed 16th of 44 competitors in the women's long jump with a mark of 5.62 meters. The freshman's jump ranks just outside the all-time leaderboards for UB outdoor history, with the tenth-ranked all-time mark being 5.72 meters (April Paabilonia, 2002).
