Bulls Face Off Against Western Michigan in MAC Championship Game

Sunday – No. 2 Buffalo vs. No. 1 Western Michigan – 2:00 PM
BUFFALO, NY – After defeating Ohio 2-1 in the semifinals of the 2024 Mid-American Conference Tournament, the Bulls will face off against the regular season champion Western Michigan Broncos in the championship match on Sunday at 2pm at the WMU Soccer Complex.
The game will be streamed on ESPN+ with Evan Stockton (play-by-play) and Kevin Piel (color) announcing.
It will be the 33rd meeting between Buffalo and Western Michigan with the Broncos maintaining a 13-12-7 series advantage. The Broncos defeated the Bulls 1-0 in Kalamazoo on September 26.
Senior midfield Kelly Severini scored in the 82nd minute to lift Buffalo to a 2-1 win over Ohio in the Mid-American Conference Tournament semifinals at the WMU Soccer Complex on Thursday afternoon. Senior Jasmine Guerber scored a go-ahead goal in the 13th minute and Severini followed with the game-winner to secure the victory. The Bobcats held a narrow advantage in overall shots and shots on goal, while the teams were tied with three corner kick opportunities each. Sophomore Lexie Thompson came up big again for the Bulls, making six saves on the day.
The Bulls are balanced offensively, with 27 goals scored off the feet of 12 different players, led by Guerber who has six goals while Arianna Zumpano came alive in league play, scoring four goals. Thompson has led the Bulls between the pipes, compiling a 11-1-7 overall record while recording 11 shutouts, a .47 goals against average and a .888 save percentage. Thompson leads the MAC and ranks in the top 10 nationally in those three categories.
As a team, the Bulls are the best defensive team in the MAC as they lead the league and rank in the top 15 nationally in goals against average (.47) save percentage (.893) and shutout percentage (.579). They also rank in the top four in the league in corner kicks per game (4.6), shots per game (13.3), goals allowed (9), goals against average (.47) and goal differential (18).
The MAC announced its postseason soccer awards on Tuesday morning, with five Buffalo student-athletes earning postseason recognition, highlighted by sophomore Lexie Thompson who was named Goalkeeper of the Year. Thompson also earned a spot on the All-MAC First Team. Joining her on the first team is graduate student defender Frederique St.-Jean while senior midfielder Kaya Schultz and junior defender Ellie Simmons received All-MAC Second Team honors. Additionally, Carolyn Hinkle earned a spot on the All-Freshman Team.
Western Michigan finished league play with an 8-0-3 mark and is 12-1-6 overall after defeating Kent State 4-1 in the semifinals on Thursday. The Broncos became the first team in MAC women's soccer history to go unbeaten in league play in back-to-back years. 2024 MAC Offensive Player of the Year Jen Blitchok leads the Broncos and the MAC, offensively, with 15 goals and eight assists, while Abby Werthman has recorded seven goals and eight assists. Lauren Boafo leads the Broncos between the pipes, recording 33 saves, a .767 save percentage and a .69 goals against average in 15 games. The Broncos have been particularly dominant at home as they have outscored opponents 30-6 at the WMU Soccer Complex.
