KALAMAZOO, MI – Senior midfield Kelly Severini scored in the 82nd minute to lift the University at Buffalo women's soccer team (11-1-7) to a 2-1 win over Ohio in the Mid-American Conference Tournament semifinals at the WMU Soccer Complex on Thursday afternoon. With the win, UB advances to its second MAC championship game appearance in the last three years.
The Bulls wasted no time getting on the board, capitalizing on their first shot on goal of the day in the 13th minute as Jasmine Guerber won a 50/50 ball and delivered a strike from the top of the box to give the Bulls a 1-0 lead.
The Bobcats had a good look in the 17th minute as they got behind the UB backline, but Maya Galko never gave up on the play and came up with a dramatic clearance to keep the Bobcats off the board.
Ohio would then break through in the 35th minute as they drew a UB foul in the box and Lillian Weller converted the ensuing penalty kick goal to tie the game at one.
The Bulls looked to answer a couple minutes later as Moa Andersson slid a pass through to the foot of Maya Ikewood who let one rip from 40 yards, but Celeste Sloma was there for the save.
The Bobcats looked to take the lead in the final seconds of the half as they played a great ball into the box off a corner kick that found the head of Rylee Mensel, but Lexie Thompson came up with a huge save and the game remained knotted at the half.
Buffalo had a couple of scoring chances early in the second half as Kaylin Ricci took a free kick from the top of the box that sailed over the crossbar, and then in the 73rd minute, Carolyn Hinkle slid a pass through to Arianna Zumpano in the middle of the box, but her shot attempt in stride also sailed high and out of play.
The aggression would pay off in the 82nd minute as Maya Galko took a corner kick and played a beautiful ball into the box that found the head of Frederique St.-Jean who won the initial header and flicked a shot that was saved by Sloma, but Severini made a heads-up play and charged in for the rebound goal to put UB up 2-1 and that would be enough as the Bulls head the Bobcats without a shot attempt over the final minutes of play.
The Bobcats held a narrow advantage in overall shots and shots on goal, while the teams were tied with three corner kick opportunities each. Thompson came up big again for the Bulls, making six saves while Sloma recorded three stops for Ohio.
Up next, Buffalo will await the winner of No. 1 Western Michigan and No. 4 Kent State, who they will face in the championship game on Sunday, November 10 at 1pm.
