
Bulls Earn Medals on Final Day of MAC Championships

AKRON, Ohio - The University at Buffalo track and field team completed competition at the MAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday, bringing home several more medals.
The first track event of the day, the women's 100-meter hurdles, saw Christina Wende place 5th overall, bettering her 8th place seed, running 13.82 for her second-best time ever. Chineme Ononiwu took the bronze medal position for the Bulls in the men's 110-meter hurdles in 14.16, his second-best time ever.
Kevin Gabalski, after placing second in the decathlon, placed 7th overall in the 110-meter hurdles, clocking 15.13. Ononiwu came back to place 4th in the 100-meters in 10.78, scoring more points for the Bulls. In the men's 200-meters, Jaron Meyer placed 5th overall in 21.70. Rounding out the sprints on the track, sophomore Tal Hamel ran a personal best mark of 47.55 to earn the bronze medal in the men's 400-meters final.
In the distance events, Evan Hilbert had an impressive close in the men's 1500-meters to take fourth place overall, running a very tactical race with a performance of 3:49.20. Freshman Gabe Watson placed 8th in the men's 800-meters in 1:55.19 and has a very bright future in the event. In the men's 5000-meters, Ryan Buzby closed out the season placing 8th in 14:33.43, while Alex Hislop placed 10th and Cory Demo 12th.
The 4 x 100-meter relay women's quartet of Travasia Singletary, Christina Wende, Kaylah Britt, and Zaria Fuller raced to a season's best of 47.08, placing 8th overall. The men's 4 x 100-meter relay squad of Jean Desir, Jaron Meyer, Chineme Ononiwu, and Justin Kleppel raced to the bronze medal in 41.14. The men's 4 x 400-meter relay also earned a podium finish and a bronze medal with the team of Brandon Robinson, Johann Matzal, Fernando Sanchez, and Tal Hamel. Their time of 3:15.19 was the best time by the Bulls in over 2 years.
In the men's discus throw, freshman Will Trembly threw a personal best to make the finals and finished 7th overall with a mark of 151'11". Senior Zaria Fuller closed out her career as a Bull earning the silver medal in the women's high jump with a height of 5'8". In the very tight competition, teammate Zahra Amos placed 5th, clearing 5'6.50".
In the men's high jump, sophomore Calvin Finger placed fourth in a personal best mark of 6'6.76", and freshman Dan Muccini cleared a personal best of 6'2.75" for 7th place.
In the last field event of the day, Wende concluded her busy 3-day meet with a bronze medal in the triple jump with a distance of 42'2". Kaylah Britt placed in the important 8th place scoring position for the Bulls, and Emily Tait placed 12th overall.
"Today we celebrated an amazing group of senior student-athletes at their last MAC Championship. I am extremely proud of their accomplishments throughout their careers at Buffalo," stated Head Coach Vicki Mitchell. "These men and women embody our core values of performance, holistic development, and community, and have achieved excellence in the classroom and on the track. We will miss them at our daily practice and competitions."
The women's team placed 8th with 62 points, moving up two places from the 2022 MAC Outdoor Championships while the men's team compiled 82 points for 5th place.
