Bulls hold Chippewas to program-best 35 points against a MAC opponent
BUFFALO, N.Y. – The University at Buffalo men's basketball team (13-15, 7-8 MAC) cruised by the Central Michigan Chippewas (10-18, 5-10 MAC) on Tuesday evening, 63-35. Curtis Jones led the Bulls with 14 points as he was one of four Bulls to score double figures. LaQuill Hardnett and Zid Powell scored 10 each as Isaiah Adams finished with a 12-point and 11-rebound double-double. C. Jones and Armoni Foster each had five assists on the night.
After Central Michigan took a 2-0 lead, the rest of the game was dominated by the Bulls. Buffalo went on a 20-0 run to take a 20-2 lead halfway through the first half. The 20-0 run marked the largest run of the season by the Bulls. After starting 1-for-1 from the floor, the Chippewas then missed seven straight baskets and had seven turnovers over the eight-minute span before making their second basket of the game. At the half the Bulls held a comfortable 36-14 lead. Central Michigan was just 5-for-20 from the floor and 0-for-7 from three-point range. The Bulls were 13-for-31 from the floor while making three three-pointers. Buffalo recorded seven steals which led to 15 points off turnovers in the opening 20 minutes of play.
The Bulls did not slow down as they padded their lead to as much as 36 points late in the second half. Buffalo started the half on a 13-0 run to take a 49-14 lead at the 14:30 mark. The Chippewas could not answer as they made just nine shots in the second half and failed to make a three-pointer in the game, finishing 0-for-13 from beyond the arc. Buffalo's defense played exceptionally well on the evening as they held the Chippewas to under 30% from the floor, forced 23 turnovers, and notched 17 steals.
Central Michigan's 35 points marked the fewest points scored by a MAC opponent against the Bulls since joining the MAC in the 1998-99 season.
The Bulls finished 23-for-63 (36.5%) from the floor and 8-for-28 (26.8%) from three-point range.
Adams' double-double marked his second of the season, the first coming on the road at Central Michigan when he also finished with 12 points and 11 rebounds.
Powell had three monstrous slam dunks that brought the crowd to their feet. He also snatched six rebounds.
Buffalo is back on the road on Saturday, Feb. 25 at Toledo. Tip will be at 2 p.m. on ESPN3.
