BUFFALO, NY - University at Buffalo's overall student-athlete GSR (Graduate Success Rate) increased to 91 percent for the 2013-16 cohort – its highest ever. Six teams — men's basketball, women's basketball, women's soccer, soccer, softball, swimming and diving and volleyball — boasted perfect 100 percent marks.
"I am thrilled to share that our student-athletes, coaches, and staff at UB have once again raised the bar by achieving our highest-ever Graduation Success Rate," Associate Athletic Director for Academic Affairs Aaron Stang said. "This milestone speaks volumes about the exceptional commitment and hard work our students invest in their academic pursuits. Their dedication is a testament to the supportive people surrounding them here at UB, all committed to seeing our student-athletes excel as athletes, students, and citizens."
This announcement comes on the heels of the UB football team winning the 2023 Academic Achievement Award from the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA). The Bulls were one of 13 schools recognized for recording a 100 percent graduation rate for members of its 2016 freshman football student-athlete class.
The GSR is based on student-athletes who entered college as freshmen in 2013-16 and allows for the removal of those individuals from the cohort who left UB in good academic standing. The Graduation Success Rate was developed by the NCAA as part of its academic reform initiative to more accurately assess the academic success of student-athletes.
The Division I Board of Directors created the GSR in 2002 in response to Division I college and university presidents who wanted data that more accurately reflected the mobility of college students beyond what the federal graduation rate measures. The federal rate counts as an academic failure any student who leaves a school, no matter whether he or she enrolls at another school. Also, the federal rate does not recognize students who enter school as transfer students.
The GSR formula removes from the rate student-athletes who leave school while academically eligible and includes student-athletes who transfer to a school after initially enrolling elsewhere. This calculation provides a more accurate appraisal of student-athlete success. The rate also allows for a deeper understanding of graduation success in individual sports than the federal metric, which provides only broad groupings.
