BULLS 101 is a 5-week summer bridge program designed to prepare incoming student-athletes for success in the classroom, in competition, and throughout their college experience. BULLS 101 is offered for incoming student-athletes who are required to participate in summer athletic obligations including first term, transfer, and graduate students. BULLS 101 provides incoming student-athletes with skills, knowledge, and resources they need in order to confidently begin life as a Bull.
Transitioning into a new environment can be challenging for anyone, especially for those with the additional pressure of being a Division I athlete; therefore, BULLS 101’s goal is to provide student-athletes with all necessary information and experiences during the summer, to allow for a smooth transition into the Fall.
Throughout the summer, student-athletes participate in an interactive series of workshops, presentations, and hands-on experiences led by the Office of Student Athlete Success. These sessions feature professionals from the athletic department and campus partners.
The program introduces students to the academic expectations of college, campus resources, personal development opportunities, and the support network available to them throughout their time at UB.
BULLS 101 focuses on developing the whole student-athlete through five key areas:
- Academic Success – Learning how to navigate college expectations, utilize campus resources, connect with academic support staff, and build habits that promote long-term success.
- Leadership & Community – Developing leadership skills through the DISC assessment, Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), Stronger Together Taskforce initiatives, and a meaningful community service experience.
- Health & Well-Being – Promoting physical and mental wellness through Bulls Thrive, sports medicine education, mindfulness practices, restorative yoga, concussion awareness, substance education, and personal wellness programming.
- Career & Professional Development – Exploring majors and career pathways while gaining practical knowledge in financial literacy, NIL education, compliance regulations, media training, interview preparation, and professional branding.
- Belonging & Buffalo Pride – Building lasting relationships with teammates, mentors, returning student-athletes, and campus leaders while embracing the traditions, culture, and values of the University at Buffalo and the Buffalo community.
By the conclusion of BULLS 101, participants have established meaningful connections, developed essential life skills, and created a strong foundation for academic, athletic, and personal success. This program equips every new Bull with the knowledge, skills, and support to build momentum from their very first semester through graduation.
