Bulls Defeat Akron to Win First MAC East Title

AKRON, Ohio – The University at Buffalo women's volleyball team (23-7, 13-5 MAC) closed the regular season with a sweep over the Akron Zips (13-16, 8-10 MAC), 25-21, 25-17, 25-21. For the first time in program history, the Bulls were crowned MAC East Co-Champions along with Ohio.
For the first time in their Division I history, the Bulls reached 23 wins. The last time they reached this mark came in 1990 when the team finished 28-6.
With the win and Ball State (16-13, 13-5 MAC) losing to Toledo (13-16, 11-7 MAC), the Bulls moved to second in the MAC standings. Buffalo will get the quarterfinal bye in the MAC Tournament on Saturday along with the top-seeded Western Michigan Broncos (28-2, 18-0 MAC). The Bulls will face the winner of 3-seed Ball State and 6-seed Bowling Green (17-12, 11-7 MAC) on Sunday at 6:30 p.m.
Last season, the Bulls advanced to their first MAC Tournament Semifinal after a 3-1 decision over Ohio.
In Akron's final match of the season, they gave the Bulls a hard-fought match. Fortunately for the Bulls, the Zips finished with 40 total errors on the evening, 20 of which came on the attack. The Bulls finished with 36 kills on 85 attempts and 10 errors, good for a hitting percentage of .306.
The MAC leader in service aces added to her total. Katrin Trebichavska had four aces on the evening. Maria Futey had three as Mandy Leigh, Maurine Calande, and Julianna Lopez added one apiece.
Trebichavska had 15.0 points against the Zips, good for 5.00 points per set. Abby Leigh finished with an attack percentage of .727 on an error free performance with eight kills on 11 attempts. Emma Gielas came through with seven kills.
M. Leigh added 30 assists as her career total now reaches 3,493.
Defensively, the Bulls racked up 10 total blocks. Tehya Shaw led with one solo and five block assists.
