Bulls Sweep Huskies in Final Conference Trip to Northern Illinois

DEKALB, Ill. – The Buffalo Bulls volleyball team (8-15, 5-9 MAC) swept the Northern Illinois Huskies (11-121, 4-10 MAC) on Saturday evening, 25-16, 26-24, 34-32. With Northern Illinois leaving the conference after this season, this marked the final conference match between both programs.
Manoela Forlin had a match-high 16 kills as Jordyn Romano had 11 kills and five blocks. Romano finished with a .381 hitting percentage. Maddie Mitchell recorded a career-high 34 digs in a 3-set match. Tehya Shaw had four blocks on the night.
Keira Kleidon and Sadie Gladhill each had 11 digs for the Bulls.
The Bulls outhit the Huskies, .243 to .171, as they also finished with more points, 65-54.
Buffalo's defense shut down the Huskies in the first set as they forced six attack errors and four reception errors. Northern Illinois only his .069 as the Bulls were a shade under .300 at .296. Buffalo had a well-balanced offensive attack as five Bulls had at last a pair of kills in the set. Buffalo never trailed in the set as they ran away with a 25-16 win.
The second set tightened up as the Huskies tallied more kills than the Bulls, 14-13. Northern Illinois also had the advantage in aces, 4-2. At the media timeout, the Bulls held a 15-12 lead. The Huskies came back to take a 19-18 lead which forced a Buffalo timeout. Northern Illinois was within set point, but the Bulls scored the final three points of the set to win, 26-24.
Both squads had nearly identical stats in the third set that went more than the distance. In a slugfest, the Bulls came out on top, 34-32. Forlin had a set-high nine kills. The Bulls forced the Huskies to use both their timeouts as the Bulls led, 15-11. Buffalo looked to end the match as they held a 24-21 lead, but the Huskies fought off match-point five times before taking a 27-26 lead. Gladhill ended the game with an ace as the Bulls held off the Huskies.
"I am really happy with how we responded after such a tough match yesterday," stated Head Coach Scott Smith. "It really shows the grit this team is developing late into the season. We served aggressively and found ways to reduce our errors. We emphasized the importance of staying steadier offensively. The fight at the end of the match was more exciting than we had wanted but we feel great about earning a sweep on the road!"
