BUFFALO, N.Y. – The University at Buffalo men's basketball team (9-10, 3-3 MAC) lost to the Toledo Rockets (13-6, 4-2 MAC) on Friday evening, 86-77. In the loss, LaQuill Hardnett recorded his fourth double-double on the year finishing with 18 points and 12 boards. Isaiah Adams (15), Curtis Jones (15), and Zid Powell (12) also finished in double figures. Armoni Foster had a great game distributing the ball as he had seven assists. Buffalo is now 8-2 at home on the season.
The game featured the two highest scoring teams in the Mid-American Conference. Toledo averaged 84.8 points per game as the Bulls averaged 79.9. The Rockets finished the game 33-of-65 (50.8%) from the floor and 9-for-23 (39.1%) from three. While going to the line 17 times, they made just 11 of their attempts (64.7%). Buffalo's shooting was nearly identical as they were 29-of-62 (46.8%) from the floor and 7-for-17 (41.2%) from beyond the arc. With one less attempt from the charity stripe, the Bulls were 12-for-16 (75.0%). The four more makes by Toledo was the difference as they eventually won by nine points.
To start the game neither team led by no more than three points until Toledo made a free throw at the 14:29 mark to lead 19-15. Hardnett and Jones led the Bulls for a stretch to tie the game at 22 with 10:50 to play in the opening half. That was the closest the half would get as Toledo continued to stay one basket ahead. Before the half, Toledo scored the final five points to extend their lead to 46-39.
The Bulls started the second half on a 7-0 run courtesy off a pair of Hardnett free throws, a Jones fastbreak layup, and a Powell and-one. Dante Maddox Jr. of Toledo hushed the crowd as he made back-to-back threes within 30-seconds to give Toledo a 52-46 lead. The Bulls only took the lead one other time at 63-62 with Hardnett making a contested layup off an assist from Adams. The free throw gave Buffalo the lead, but not for long as Toledo scored on their next possession. Buffalo's pace kept them in the game until the final three minutes. Averaging nearly 19 fastbreak points per game, the Bulls scored 23 on the night.
Despite having a 21-to-13 assist-to-turnover ratio compared to Toledo's 16-to-11, the Bulls dropped the contest. It's just the second time this season Buffalo has lost with a positive assist-to-turnover ratio with the first time occurring at West Virginia.
The Bulls are back in action on Tuesday, Jan. 24 as they travel to Muncie, Ind. to play Ball State at 7 p.m. The game will be streamed on ESPN+.
