TOLEDO, OHIO – The University at Buffalo women's soccer team (9-1, 3-0 MAC) extended their win streak to seven games as they defeated Toledo 1-0 at Paul Hotmer Field on Thursday night.
With the win, the Bulls improve to 9-1 overall, the best start to a season since 1999. Additionally, UB recorded their seventh straight shutout victory which is a new program record, besting the previous mark of six set by the 1988 squad.
The Bulls were aggressive from the opening kickoff as Leah Wengender and Olivia Bizzoni combined for three shots in the first 10 minutes of play. Later, Katie Krohn and Payton Robertson got in on the action recording a pair of shots but both sailed high.
Buffalo broke through in the 27th minute as Robertson played a ball to Krohn who found Jasmine Guerber and she drilled a shot into the back of the net for her sixth goal of the year to give UB a 1-0 lead.
The Bulls stayed aggressive as they had another scoring opportunity in the 35th minute as Cashlin Copley ripped a shot on net and Marissa Foster followed on the rebound but Karson Hill made a pair of good saves. Arianna Zumpano put the pressure on Hill a couple more times late in the half, but she came up with the stops and it remained a one goal lead for UB at the break.
Buffalo continued to attack in the second half as Wengender had another good look in the 56th minute but Hill was there for the stop. Later, Taylor Caridi and Foster got shots off and Annie Judasz also had a good look, but all sailed off target. Tess Ford looked to add an insurance goal in the 84th minute but Hill was there to knock it away.
The UB backline has been superb, not conceding a goal since August 28 at nationally ranked Rutgers. The Bulls outshot the Rockets 18-6, including an 8-3 advantage in shots on goal, while also recording 12 corner kick opportunities. Fifth year goalkeeper Emily Kelly made three saves on the night, while Hill recorded seven stops for Toledo. Robertson was named Player of the Game by the UB coaches for her tireless effort, tackles, and composure in the attack.
"We did a lot of great things tonight and at times really showed our quality," said head coach Shawn Burke. "You would like to find the back of the net more with all of our chances, but a big road win and another shutout just shows this group's character."
Buffalo returns to action on Sunday as they host Western Michigan on Homecoming weekend. Kickoff from UB Stadium is set for 1pm.
