Volleyball Set to Open the 2022 Season

BUFFALO, N.Y. β The University at Buffalo women's volleyball team will begin the 2022 season this weekend as the Bulls host the UB Invite. The University of Alabama at Birmingham Trailblazers (UAB), Cleveland State Vikings, and Xavier Musketeers will visit Alumni Arena.

The team will open with their first match on Friday, Aug. 26 at 6 p.m. against UAB. On Saturday, the Bulls will have a doubleheader as they face Xavier at 2 p.m. and Cleveland State at 6 p.m. All the UB Invite matches will be livestreamed on YouTube.

Buffalo returns 10 veterans from last year's squad while adding six newcomers. Leading the returning charge on offense is junior Emma Gielas and senior Courtney Okwara. Gielas finished second on the team with 288 kills with Okwara finishing third with 276 from a season ago. This comes with Gielas only playing 92 sets as Okwara played in all but two. Okwara also led the team with 102 blocks last year.

Maria Futey returns as last year's digs leader as she had 314. Sophomore Mandy Leigh was just behind as she had 311 digs.

Joining the Bulls from University of Louisiana Monroe is fifth year Cali Assaley. She has 672 career kills after making 59 starts. Hayley Montoya comes from Canisius College where she appeared in 22 matches last season. She recorded 119 digs for the Golden Griffins. Julianna Lopez played one season at Fresno City College where she was named Central Valley Conference Honorable Mention. Staying within the conference is Katrin Trebichavska who comes from Bowling Green where she played two seasons for the Falcons.
