Track & Field Compete at MAC Championships

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The University at Buffalo track and field team wrapped up their 2022 Mid-American Conference Championship run on Saturday afternoon. The men's team finished in fifth place earning 48 points as the women's team claimed 27 points, good for 10th place.
DAY ONE RECAP
In the men's 200-meter dash prelim, Tal Hamel and Jean Desir advanced to the finals. Caleb Nickens finished fifth in the hammer throw with a toss of 58.94-meters/193'-4". Alex McNulty and Danil Chernov gave points to the team as McNulty finished fourth (56.15-meters/213'-5") and Chernov finished sixth (55.27-meters/181'-4"). Asia Hoyte gave the Bulls their first medal of competition as she finished third in the women's hammer throw. She finished with a personal record toss of 58.01-meters/190'-4".
DAY TWO RECAP
Molly McCreedy finished fifth in the shot put with a toss of 15.24-meters. On the men's side, Jonathan Surdej won the shot put with a toss of 17.82-meters, a new personal record. UB has now won 11 of the last 12 MAC outdoor shot put titles on the men's side. Taking home the bronze medal in the men's decathlon was Michael Wolford with a total score of 6,651. Thomas Flannery finished fifth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 9:44.98, giving the Bulls 2 points.
DAY THREE RECAP
McCreedy also competed in the discus throw where she finished fifth with a throw of 47.02-meters. The team of Jean Desir, Justin Kleppel, Tal Hamel, and Jermaine Ewers claimed the bronze medal in the 4x100-meter relay in 41.56-seconds. Ewers would come back and finish fifth in the 100-meter dash in 10.59-seconds. Ryan Buzby ran to a fifth place finish in the 5,000-meter run in 14:54.78. In the men's 1,600-meter relay, the team of Connor Lehr, Elijah Kerner, Johann Matzal, and Tal Hamel finished fifth in 3:21.51. Calvin Finger managed to snag a point for the Bulls in the high jump as he leaped 1.95-meters/6'-04.75" for sixth place. Kaylah Britt (12.58-meters/41'-03.25") earned 2 points with a seventh place finish in the triple jump. Zaria Fuller earned the silver medal in the women's high jump with a height of 1.76-meters.
Tal Hamel earned Freshman Track Performer of the Year, the first Bull to do so.
