BUFFALO, N.Y. – The University at Buffalo track and field team wrapped up their regular season this weekend at the Penn Relays and Ashland Alumni Open.
PENN RELAYS
The weekend started with a bang as Ryan Buzby set the new school record in the men's 5,000-meter run. Winning his heat, and finishing 29th overall in an extremely competitive field, Buzby finished in 14:12.22. His teammate Scott Loforte finished in 14:41.11, good for 61st. Cal Puskar, Fernando Sanchez, Johann Matzal, and Evan Hilbert finished in 11th in the men's distance medley relay in 9:58.43.
ASHLAND ALUMNI OPEN
Ashland University has been known for their reputation in the throws. Their long-time head coach, Judd Logan, a 4-time USA Olympian in the hammer throw passed away in January, 2022, after a battle with Leukemia and the throws competition at the Ashland Alumni Open was a celebration of his life and legacy. The UB throws group took advantage of the energy and started off the competition on Friday afternoon. Both Asia Hoyte and Imahni Sinclair threw new personal best marks. Hoyte's throw of 183'-9"/56.02-meters placed her fourth in the elite hammer throw and moved her to eighth in program history and fifth in the MAC rankings. Sinclair's best of 179'-11"/54.84-meters placed second in the women's open hammer throw and earned her the 10th best on the UB all-time top-10 list and moved her up to seventh in the MAC.
On Saturday at the Ashland Alumni Open, the field events continued to shine for the Bulls. In the throws, Mark Przybocki placed fourth in the open shot put (51'-1") while Jonathan Surdej placed fifth in the men's elite shot put with a best throw of 56'-4.75". In the women's shot put, Molly McCreedy had an excellent series with five of her throws over 15.00-meters. Her best of 15.53-meters/50'-11.50" placed second in the elite division. Kiara McDowell had her best of the year at 41'-1.5" placing sixth in the open division. Quinn Smith placed fifth in the men's elite division discus throw with a best mark of 161'-9".
In the women's triple jump, the UB women showed their strength taking four of the top-five places. Junior Kaylah Britt leaped out to a new personal best mark of 41'-5.75", breaking the facility record and moving her up to second in program history and second in the MAC. Britt now ranks 35th in the NCAA East Region. Christina Wende (season's best mark of 39'-3.75") and Emily Tait (38'-3.25") placed second and third, while Nisa Raqib place fifth overall. Freshman Calvin Finger placed sixth in the high jump and seventh in the long jump, while Violet Drinkwater had a season's best in the pole vault and Kelsey Shapiro had a season's best in the high jump.
On the track, freshman Cory Demo had a personal best in the men's 1,500-meter run in 3:57.03. Lydia Lanski ran a personal best of 14.68-seconds in the 100-metr hurdles, placing third in the finals. Christopher Nowak ran a season's best of 1:55.15 in the 800-meter run winning the event with teammate Patrick Hazlitt (1:55.39) in third place. Payton Rowe placed second in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:03.87, just off her best last weekend (1:03.62), and teammate Patsy Iannico placed fourth (1:04.51). Freshman Jermaine Ewers placed third in the 100-meter dash final in 10.74-seconds, while senior Priscilla Faa closed out her regular season career with a nice win in the women's 100-meter dash in 12.12-seconds. Teammate Travasia Singletary placed fifth (12.43). Closing out the day on the track was senior Nicholas Taboni winning the men's 5,000-meter run in 15:35.27, taking his first collegiate individual victory.
"With less than two weeks to the MAC Championships we continue to see improvements," stated Head Coach Vicki Mitchell. "Despite some key injuries to the team, we have individuals working to step up and make their mark with our program. Our coaching staff is focused on keeping our student-athletes healthy and prepared to excel when we arrive to Kalamazoo, Mich."
