BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo softball team split a doubleheader with Western Michigan on Saturday at Kenmore East High School. The Bulls defeated the Broncos 9-7 in dramatic fashion in game one before falling 4-2 in game two of the day.
The Bulls struck first in game two in the bottom of the second inning as Alexis Matheney led off with a single up the middle and later after a pair of walks, Anna Aguon singled to left, scoring two runs to put UB up 2-0.
Buffalo added to their lead in the bottom of the third as Rachel Steffan drilled a solo home run to right center field to give the Bulls a 3-1 lead.
Western Michigan got the bats going in the top of the fifth as they tied the game on a two-run home run and later added a solo shot to take a 4-3 lead.
Buffalo continued to attack with the long ball in the bottom of the sixth as Olivia Kincanon crushed a two-run home run to right center field to give the Bulls a 5-4 lead.
Western Michigan retook the lead on a three-run home run in the top of the seventh to go up 7-5 but the Bulls weren't going down without a fight as Brianna Castro blasted a solo home run to left to cut the lead to one. Later, Matheney drew a leadoff walk and Madison Fernimen reached on an error by the WMU third baseman which brought Kincanon to the plate and she drilled her second home run of the day, this time a three-run shot to left to give the Bulls the 9-7 walk off victory. Sophomore Julia Tarantino got the win in the circle for UB.
The Buffalo bats continued to do damage to start game two as Castro and Alexis Lucyshyn drew a pair of walks and Matheney singled up the middle to load the bases for Fernimen who took advantage as she lined a double down the right field line to give UB an early 2-0 lead.
The Broncos got on the board in the top of the fourth on a sac bunt RBI, but Tarantino got a big strikeout to end the half inning and limit the damage. Western Michigan then tied the game in the top of the fifth on an RBI double.
Both offenses stalled before the Broncos broke through scoring two runs on three hits in the top of the seventh to go up 4-2 and that would be all they would need as the Bulls were unable to plate a run in the bottom of the inning.
Buffalo will conclude the series with the Broncos with a single game on Sunday at 12pm.
