BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo softball team defeated Western Michigan 2-1 in the series finale on Sunday afternoon at Kenmore East High School. With the win the Bulls, who have now one two straight series, improve to 13-10 overall and 5-2 in league play.
Buffalo flashed some leather early as they turned a double play to end the top of the first and the defense continued to click as Alexis Lucyshyn retired the Broncos in order on a pair of ground outs and a strikeout to keep the game scoreless through two innings of play.
The Bulls broke through in the bottom of the fifth as Sara Kelly drew a walk and later stole second and Brianna Castro also earned a free pass to first before Rachel Steffan smacked a single down the right field line to score Kelly and Castro scored on a WMU throwing error to give the Bulls a 2-0 lead.
The Broncos put a runner in scoring position in the top of the sixth, but Lucyshyn and the UB defense came up with a big groundout to escape the jam. Western Michigan looked to rally in the bottom of the seventh as they scored on a solo home run to right to cut the lead to one but Lucyshyn settled and retired the next three batters to secure the victory.
Lucyshyn got the win in the circle as she gave up just two hits while striking out eight in a complete game effort.
Buffalo returns to action on Wednesday, April 6, as they travel to Big 4 foe St. Bonaventure for a doubleheader with the Bonnies starting at 3pm.
