OLEAN, NY – The University at Buffalo softball team split its doubleheader at St. Bonaventure on Wednesday afternoon at Joyce Field. The Bulls defeated the Bonnies 7-2 in game one before dropping game two 2-1.
Buffalo struck first in game one as Alexis Lucyshyn helped her cause with an RBI double to center field to give the Bulls an early 1-0 lead.
The Bonnies tied the game on an RBI double of their own in the bottom of the inning and took the lead in the bottom of the second on a triple and a UB throwing error to go up 2-1.
Buffalo answered in the top of the third as Brianna Castro led off with a double down the left field line and Rachel Steffan followed with an RBI single up the middle to tie the game at two and later, the Bulls scored on a wild pitch to take a 3-2 lead.
Both offenses stalled until the top of the seventh when the Bulls broke the game open as they scored a run on a Bonnies throwing error to retake to go up 4-2 and then later, Alexis Matheney singled to left to score Steffan to make it 5-2. Madison Fernimen put the exclamation mark on the half inning with a two-run home run to right to give the Bulls a 7-2 lead and that would be plenty of run support as Lucyshyn struck out the side to seal the victory.
Lucyshyn got the win in the circle as she allowed just one earned run on six hits while striking out nine batters in a complete game effort.
The Bulls' bats picked up where they left off to start game two as Anna Aguon led off with a solo home run to left field to give the Bulls an early 1-0 lead.
The Bonnies tied the game in the bottom of the inning, but it would be a pitchers' duel from there as neither team recorded another hit until the bottom of the fifth when the hosts took the lead on an RBI single and that would be enough as the Bulls got a runner in scoring position in the top of the seventh but were unable to plate a run.
Sophomore Julia Tarantino put forth a solid effort in the circle as she allowed just two runs on three hits while striking out five batters in six innings of work.
Buffalo returns to action on Saturday, April 9 as they travel to Bowling Green to for a three-game series with the Falcons beginning with a doubleheader at 1pm.
