Bulls Drop Friday Doubleheader to Miami (OH)

BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo softball team dropped a doubleheader against Miami (OH) on Friday afternoon at Nan Harvey Field. The Bulls fell 3-0 in game one before dropping game two 11-7.

The RedHawks struck first in the top of the third as they scored a pair of runs on two hits and a UB error to take an early 2-0 lead.

Alexis Lucyshyn got going in the top of the fourth as she got a pair of strikeouts and a ground ball out to retire the RedHawks in order. Miami would load the bases in the top of the fifth, but Lucyshyn escaped the jam as Sara Kelly made a great catch in right field to end the half inning.

Miami added a run in the top of the sixth on a solo home run to go up 3-0 and that would be all they needed as Courtney Vierstra held UB to just two hits on the game.

In game two, Anna Aguon drew a leadoff walk and later, Rachel Steffan drilled a line drive home run over the wall in left field to give the Bulls an early 2-0 lead.

The RedHawks took the lead in the top of the third on a three-run home run to go up 4-2 and would later break the game open, scoring three runs on four hits and a UB error to take an 8-2 lead in the top of the sixth.

The Bulls loaded the bases in the bottom of the inning but were unable to plate a run and that was costly as the RedHawks added three runs on four hits to take an 11-2 lead.

UB needed some magic in the final frame, and they loaded the bases on the first career single for Marissa Calloway and a single by Ally Sobaszek, which brought up Brianna Castro who cleared the bases with a grand slam to pull UB within five. The Bulls added another run on an RBI single from Madison Fernimen to cut the lead to 11-7 but the comeback came up just short.

Buffalo concludes the series with a single game at 12pm on Saturday.
