DETROIT, MI – Three University at Buffalo wrestlers competed on Thursday in the opening day of the NCAA Championships held at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit. Unfortunately, all three were knocked out the first day.
John Arceri made his first career appearance at the NCAA Championships, wrestling at 149 lbs. In his opening match, Arceri battled, but dropped a 5-0 decision to fourth-seed and Big Ten runner-up Sammy Sasso of Ohio State. He then drew Northern Iowa's Colin Realbuto. Unfortunately, Realbuto was able to pin Arceri in the first period.
Jay Nivison was also making his first NCAA appearance. The Bulls' 174-pounder was pinned by the four-time All-American Hayden Hidlay of NC State late in the first period. In the wrestlebacks, Nivison dropped an 8-0 major decision to Wyoming's Hayden Hastings.
Petite was the veteran of the group, making his second straight NCAA appearance. He drew ACC champion Ed Scott of NC State in his opening match. Trailing, 4-2, Petite rallied to tie the match early in the second period with an escape. However, he got caught in a tough position and was pinned. In the consolation bracket, Petite faced Elijah Cleary of Pittsburgh and dropped a tight, 3-2 decision.
"I'm proud of these guys and our team this year," head coach John Stutzman said. "We did a lot of good things throughout the year and a lot of progress was made."
Thursday brought an end to one of the finest seasons in program history. The Bulls went 12-6 overall and 7-2 in Mid-American Conference duals. It was their most conference wins since joining the MAC in 1998.
