SYRACUSE, NY – The University at Buffalo women's tennis team had their eight-match winning streak snapped on Saturday afternoon as the Bulls dropped a tough match at Syracuse, 5-2, picking up a pair of wins in singles.
In doubles play, Syracuse won at first doubles and the Bulls won at third doubles as Ambre Amat and Lolina Schietekat Sedas scored a big 6-3 victory. The Bulls hung tough at second doubles before falling, 6-4.
In singles action, senior Gabriella Akopyan kept her strong play going as she picked up a 6-2, 6-2 win at third singles. At sixth singles, Azra Deniz Comlek gave the Bulls their second point with a 6-4, 6-3 win. At fifth singles, sophomore Mariana Carvajal Torres overcame a first-set deficit to win the second, 6-4. She ultimately fell 10-7 in the super tiebreaker.
"There was some outstanding tennis played today and I really thought Gabby, Deniz, and Mariana played well in singles," said head coach Kristen Maines. "Our third doubles team was outstanding this afternoon and overall, I am just really proud of how we played as a group this entire weekend."
The Bulls will have a week off before return to the courts on Feb. 25 at Cleveland State.
