UB Women’s Soccer to Host MAC Tournament on Thursday and Sunday

BUFFALO, NY – After earning their second Mid-American Conference regular season championship in program history, the University at Buffalo women's soccer team (13-1-4, 7-0-4 MAC) continues their quest for a MAC Tournament championship on Thursday afternoon in the conference semifinal round.
The Bulls will play host to No. 5 seeded Miami (OH) at 5:00 pm on Friday with the other semifinal contest featuring No. 2 Ball State and No. 3 Bowling Green to follow at 7:30 pm. The winners of the two semifinal contests will meet on Sunday at 1pm at UB Stadium to fight for an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
Admission for the semifinal and championship matches will be $10 for adults and $7 for seniors (age 62 and over) and youth (age 12 and under). Admission is free for all students with a valid ID from a participating MAC institution.
UB earned the top seed in this year's tournament after finishing the regular season with a 13-1-4 overall record and a 7-0-4 league mark. The Bulls enter the semifinals on a 15-game unbeaten streak, which is a new program record, besting the previous mark set by the 2014 squad. The UB backline has recorded 12 shutouts on the season which is tied for second in program history.
The Bulls have showed balance all season long as they have scored 33 goals off the feet of 10 different players led by sophomores Jasmine Guerber and Arianna Zumpano who have scored eight and seven goals, respectively. Buffalo leads the nation and the MAC in goals against average (.444) while also leading the league in points per game (6.17), total assists (45), assists per game (2.50), shots on goal per game (7.17) and shutout percentage (.667). They rank second in total points (111), total goals (33) and scoring offense (1.83).
Defensively, fifth year goalkeeper Emily Kelly leads the conference and ranks in the top 10 in the nation in shutouts (11), goals against average (0.448) and save percentage (.869). Senior Payton Robertson ranks second in the MAC in total assists (8) and assists per game (0.44) while freshman Ellie Simmons ranks sixth in the league in both categories.
The Bulls put their unbeaten home record (9-0-1) on the line on Thursday afternoon against the Miami (OH) RedHawks. It will be the 28th meeting between Buffalo and Miami (OH) with the RedHawks owning a 16-8-3 all-time advantage. The two teams played to a scoreless draw in Oxford on October 6.
Miami (OH) enters Thursdays' semifinal with a 9-4-6 overall record after defeating Ohio 1-0 in the quarterfinals on Sunday. The RedHawks are led offensively by sophomore Makenna Morrison and redshirt junior Madeline Schlecht who have recorded five goals each. In net, Miami (OH) is led by All-MAC Second Team honoree Izzie Vaccari, who is 9-4-6 overall with 71 saves, a 0.845 save percentage and a 0.68 goals against average in 19 starts.
All-MAC teams and major award winners were announced on Tuesday afternoon as the Bulls received a league-best five All-MAC honors, highlighted by Kelly who was named Goalkeeper of the Year, Simmons who earned Defensive Player of the Year honors and head coach Shawn Burke who was named Coach of the Year. Kelly and Simmons were also named to the All-MAC First Team while Hannah Callaghan, Robertson and Leah Wengender received All-MAC Second Team honors and Simmons and Katie Krohn were named to the All-Freshman squad.
