BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women's soccer team (6-2-1) played to a scoreless double overtime draw with Kent State on Sunday afternoon at UB Stadium.
It was a tale of stellar goalkeeping as the two keepers combined for 25 saves including a career-high 11 stops for senior Emily Kelly. Kelly was named Player of the Game for her efforts as she and the Bulls notched their fifth clean sheet of the season.
The Bulls had their first scoring opportunity of the game in the ninth minute as Katherine Camper and Marcy Barberic had a pair of great looks but Sarah Melen made the saves.
Kent State answered on the other end as Khyla Porter got off a pair of shots but Kelly made two tough saves.
The two teams would battle the rest of the half with the Golden Flashes holding a narrow 9-8 edge in shots, while the Bulls held the 5-1 edge in corner kicks.
The Bulls would have a plethora of opportunities in the second half starting in the 54th minute Barberic slid a ball to Arianna Zumpano on the fastbreak and she ripped a shot on net but Melen made a great save. Later in the 61st minute, Zumpano had a good look and then Alya Ruken was there for the rebound but Melen and the Golden Flashes came up with the stop once again.
Kent State had several chances as well, including on a set piece in the 77th minute, but Kelly made a great save in traffic to escape the pressure.
Buffalo had the advantage in scoring opportunities in the two overtime periods as they outshot Kent State 8-2 in extra time but neither team was able to find the back of the net.
The Bulls outshot the Golden Flashes 27-19 overall, including a 14-11 edge in shots on goal while also holding an 8-3 advantage in corner kick opportunities.
"Kent is always a tough opponent," said associate head coach Casey Derkacz. "It's always a battle when we play them. I thought we showed grit and resiliency. We have to take pride in certain things and some of the small battles won like being able to keep a clean sheet. I thought we showed a lot of toughness out there today.
The Bulls return to action on Thursday, September 30 as they host Ball State at UB Stadium at 7pm.
