BUFFALO, N.Y. – The University at Buffalo track and field teams are ready to take on the Mid-American Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships this weekend. The squad will travel to Mount Pleasant, Mich. for the first time this season. Central Michigan University will host the championships in the Jack Skoog Indoor Track as they are set to start on Friday, Feb. 26 at 10 a.m. The championships will run through Saturday, Feb. 27 as day two will start at 10:30 a.m.
PREVIOUSLY IN MOUNT PLEASANT…
This will be the Bulls first trip to Mount Pleasant since the 2015 MAC Indoor Championships where the men's team placed fourth and the women's team placed fifth. During the 2015 MAC Championships, senior Jonathan Jones set a MAC Championship and school-record toss in the shot put to pick up 10 points for the Bulls. With his second throw in the finals, a 20.06-meter heave, he rewrote his own indoor school record of 19.95-meters and his meet record of 19.59 meters. It would be the fifth-furthest throw in the NCAA at that point in the season.
CHAMPIONSHIP PREVIEW
Both the men's and women's teams are ranked second in this week's USTFCCCA regional rankings. Both squads are behind Army West Point for first. The men's team will have a tough task on hand as Akron as won eight MAC titles in the last 10 seasons. They will face Akron, Eastern Michigan ad Kent State for the MAC crown. The women's team will face a strong field as Eastern Michigan looks to repeat and with their third title in four seasons. The Bulls will also square off against Northern Illinois, Ball State, Akron, Bowling Green, Toledo, Miami (OH), Central Michigan, Kent State, Ohio, and Western Michigan.
Brandon Burke will attempt to win the men's high jump like how he did so at the 2019 MAC Outdoor Championships. The last Bulls to win the men's indoor high jump was Chris Reape in 2014. Burke, the school record holder in the event, currently ranks first in the MAC and sixth in the NCAA with a leap of 2.19-meters (7'-02.25). Teammate Nakia Williams, Jr. shouldn't be overlooked as he is tied for fourth in the event in the UB record books with a height of 2.10-meters (6'-10.75"). On the women's side of the event, Samantha Hjelmar has had a terrific comeback season after missing last season due to injury. She set a season-best height of 1.69-meters (5'-06.50") at the 17th Annual Akron Invite. That height is seventh in the UB record books.
Priscilla Faa has had an exceptional indoor season. The senior sprinter finds herself in the UB record books. Faa has ran the 60-meter dash in 7.75 seconds this season, which moves her to 10th in the event at UB. She has also performed well in the 200-meter dash this season. After winning both events at the Kent State Tune-Up, Faa looks to find herself on the podium this weekend.
Junior thrower Molly McCreedy has had a very consistent and dominant season in the shot put. She is ninth in UB history with a toss of 15.15-meters (49'-08.50"). She has placed top-3 at every meet this season and will look to do the same this weekend.
The men's distance team has been fantastic all season and tearing up the record books. In the mile and 3,000 and 5,000-meter runs, the Bulls have set seven new top-10 times. Benjamin Cardamone set a new school record in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 8:17.20 at the 17th Annual Akron Invite. Cardamone is also seventh in the mile run. Thomas Flannery is sixth in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 8:22.85 with Scott Loforte 10th in the event. William Hilbert beat his personal-record in the 5,000-meter run to hold the second-best time in school history of 14:26.19. Armani Merlino is seventh with a time of 14:31.00 as Loforte is eighth with a time of 14:38.52.
