
Bulls Rewrite UB Indoor Record Book at Akron’s Haynes Lancaster Open

AKRON, Ohio - The University at Buffalo track and field program competed at the University of Akron's Haynes Lancaster Open on Friday night. The Bulls rewrote the program's indoor record book, with five new performances entering the all-time ranks.
Micah Blair started the night with a personal record in the men's long jump, rising to fifth in UB indoor history with a mark of 7.38 meters. Blair's new personal best surpassed his previous indoor record of 7.05 meters. The sophomore won the event for the Bulls. Daniel Muccini (6th, 6.80m) and Ryan Cardichon (7th, 6.74m) also competed for the program.
Michael Parks continued the Bulls' momentum, winning the men's 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.00. Parks' time was also a personal best performance, rising to third in UB indoor history. The senior's previous best time of 8.03 ranked fourth in the program's indoor ranks.
Gemma Galligani posted a personal best of her own, joining the indoor ranks in the women's 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.64 seconds to win the event. Galligani's time took seventh in the UB indoor record book. The sophomore also placed fourth in the women's 400-meter dash with a new personal best time of 59.15. Galligani was within three seconds of the program's top 10 for the event (56.83).
Sam Mellinger was the fourth athlete to join the UB indoor record book at Akron, taking the 10th spot on the men's 60-meter dash all-time list. Mellinger's time of 6.89 seconds earned second place in the event. Braden Dunn made his debut with the program, trailing Mellinger to finish third and nearly reaching the indoor record book (6.91). Rylee VanAlstine (10th, 7.09), Matthew Schaffert (11th, 7.09) and Parks (12th, 7.12) also competed for the Bulls.
Dunn also finished third in the men's 200-meter dash, posting a time of 21.88 seconds. The time nearly reached the UB indoor record book (21.77). Mellinger placed fourth (22.30), Schaffert finished fifth (22.34) and VanAlstine placed sixth (22.35). Mellinger's time was another personal best.
On the women's side of the 200-meter dash, Sophia Sampson placed second with a new indoor personal record time of 25.08. The sophomore's performance entered the UB indoor record book at 10th, beating her previous best of 25.20. Shannon Schmieder (5th, 25.62) and Hailey Martinez (6th, 25.70) also competed for the Bulls.
Sampson also won the women's 60-meter dash with a time of 7.81, beating her previous indoor best in the event of 7.86. The time was just shy of reaching the program's record book (7.73). Martinez placed second in the event with a personal best time of 7.84, beating her previous indoor best of 7.87.
Brianna Urban won the women's 3,000-meter run with a personal best time of 10:37.38. The senior shattered her previous personal record by nearly 20 seconds (10:57.03). Paris Welker finished second, only to Urban (10:38.76), beating her personal best time of 10:56.78 by 20 over seconds.
Akuot Kuany won the women's high jump in her season debut, posting a mark of 1.65 meters. On the men's side, Cardichon took first place with a mark of 1.95 meters in his season debut.
Schmieder finished second in the women's long jump with an indoor personal best mark of 5.45 meters. The sophomore beat her previous best of 5.31 meters.
Brian Murphy placed 11th in the men's pole vault with a mark of 4.80 meters to round out the Bulls' competitors.
