Bulls Show Promise at Akron Quad Meet
1/15/2021 11:05:00 PM | Track and Field
AKRON, Ohio – The University at Buffalo track and field teams competed at the Akron Quad Meet on Friday evening. The men's team claimed third with a score of 78.5 as the women's team finished fourth with 56.0 points.
On the men's side, the distance team absolutely dominated the 3,000-meter run. Benjamin Cardamone won the 3,000-meter run in a time of 8:21.08. His time ranks fifth in the UB indoor history books with his personal-best mark. Also competing in the men's 3,000-meter run were William Hilbert (fourth place, 8:28.77), Cal Puskar (fifth place, 8:29.37), Scott Loforte (sixth place, 8:29.59), Ryan Buzby (seventh place, 8:36.42) and freshman Sean O'Brien (ninth place, 8:46.40), where they all set personal-bests.
In the men's weight throw, junior Caleb Nickens set a new personal-best with a throw of 18.46-meters (60'-06.75"). This distance is good for fifth in UB history, passing Rashidi Greene's 2000 distance of 18.31-meters (60'-01.00").
In the women's 60-meter dash, Travasia Singletary stampeded to the finish line with a personal-best time of 7.88 seconds. Singletary showed a great start to the new season.
There is no better story than a comeback. On Friday evening the Bulls had two comebacks. Not coming from behind to win, but comebacks from surgeries. After having to miss the 2019-20 season, both Brandon Burke and Samantha Hjelmar showed that they're still both one of the best in their events. Burke started where his 2018-19 season ended, as he finished in second in the men's high jump with a height of 2.12-meters (6'-11.50"). In the women's high jump, Hjelmar also finished in second place with a height of 1.64-meters (5'-04.50").
"It was noticeable that it was the first meet in 10 and a half months, but getting the competition in was exciting," stated Head Coach Vicki Mitchell. "With a very small squad competing today, we had some decent marks to start, but a lot of work in front of us. Akron hosted a very well-run meet. Go Bulls!"
