
Bulls Conclude Fall At MAC Invite

KALAMAZOO, MI – The University at Buffalo men's tennis team wrapped up its fall season this past weekend at the MAC Invite, hosted by Western Michigan University.
In doubles action, Matthew Johnson and Hao Sheng Koay finished in third place in the 1 Doubles Flight as they won their opening match 8-6 over Northern Illinois and then following a semifinals loss, they came back with an 8-2 win over Binghamton. Valdemar Holm and Vilhelm Fridell also played in the same flight and they came away with a seventh place finish with an 8-1 win over Ball State.
In the 2 Doubles Flight, Simon Wibler and Greg Hastings won the consolation final after overcoming a first round loss. The duo then won 8-4 against their opponents from Ball State and took the consolation final 8-6 over Binghamton. Buffalo also picked up a win in the consolation final at 3 Doubles with the duo of D Giritharan and Jonah Murphy. They won 8-7 (3) in their second match over Ball State and took the final 8-4 over a combined team from Western Michigan and Binghamton.
In singles action, Koay finished in third place in the Flight 1 Singles beginning with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Tiago Lourenco from Binghamton. Following a second round loss, he defeated Bor Muzar of Northern Illinois, 6-4, 7-5. Fridell also won a pair of matches in the flight with a 7-5, 7-6 (4) win over Danilo Vukotic of Toledo as well as a final victory over Danilo Kovacevic of Ball State.
Johnson made it to the finals of the Flight 2 Singles as he opened with a 6-7 (5), 7-6 (5), 7-6 (7) win over Michael Pawlowicz of Binghamton. Johnson then beat Kristopher Ortega of Northern Illinois 6-3, 7-6 (4) before falling in three sets in the championship to Kennosuke Nouchi of Western Michigan. Holm finished in third place in the flight as he won his first match 6-1, 6-4 over Christopher Adams of Ball State and defeated Ortega in the third place match, 6-4, 6-2.
The Bulls claimed the championship in Flight 3 Singles courtesy of Wibler, who won his opening match 7-6 (4), 6-3 over Mikko Malinen. Wibler then took down Kushaan Nath of Binghamton, 6-2, 6-3 and won the championship over Vincent Orlando of Ball State, 7-5, 3-6, 6-3.
Hastings won his opening match 6-2, 6-2 in the Flight 4 Singles bracket and Giritharan also came away with a victory in Flight 5 with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Alec Robillard of Ball State.
Murphy finished a perfect 3-0 in his performance at Flight 6 beginning with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Luke Karniewich of Binghamton and a 7-6 (6), 6-4 win over Zac Faveri of Western Michigan. He concluded action on Sunday with a victory over Bryce Bonin of Ball State.
The Bulls will return to action during the spring semester when they take part in the dual match portion of their schedule.
