Mount Pleasant, MI – The University at Buffalo women's soccer team played to a scoreless draw with Central Michigan at CMU Stadium on Thursday night.
The tie moves Buffalo to 5-3-1 in the MAC, good for 16 points, while Central Michigan is 4-3-2 in the conference, which gives the Chippewas 14 points. Each team has two games remaining on the schedule.
Central Michigan ended the match with a 19-9 shot advantage, with six of those shots on goal, but the Bulls turned in a solid defensive effort as the UB back line preserved their sixth clean sheet of the season. Senior Gurjeena Jandu was named Player of the Match by the UB coaching staff for her defensive efforts on the night.
The Bulls would have their first scoring chance of the game in the 13th minute as Katherine Camper drilled a shot off the crossbar. UB would have another good look right before the half as Adrianna VanCuyck played one on net but Zoie Reed was there for the stop.
Offense would be at a premium for most of the second half with just a handful of shots on goal for both sides combined. Buffalo had a good look in the 71st minute as Hannah Callaghan ripped a shot from about 20 yards out but Reed made the sliding save to knock it out of play.
Marcy Barberic would take the lone shot for the Bulls in the overtime periods in the 109th minute but her shot sailed high and over the crossbar.
In net, Emily Kelly recorded her fourth shutout of the season, making six saves. It was the 11th shutout of her career, moving her into a tie for sixth all-time at Buffalo with Beckey Harvey (1987-88). Reed made five saves for the Chippewas.
"You always want the three points, but CMU is tough to play against," said head coach Shawn Burke. "Getting out of here with a point is big for us and I'm really proud of the player's efforts."
Buffalo is back in action on Sunday as the Bulls travel to Eastern Michigan for a 1pm match against the Eagles.
