OKLAHOMA CITY, OK – Senior 141 pounder Nick Flannery's run in the NCAA Tournament came to an end on Thursday night at the Chesapeake Energy Arena in front of a packed house of 15,375 people. Flannery was the lone Bull to qualify for the NCAA's and he lost both matches on the opening day of the three-day tournament.
In his opening match of the day, Flannery was matched up with the Atlantic Coast Conference champion at 141-pounds, Devin Carter from Virginia Tech. Carter had a perfect record of 16-0 on the season entering the match and he moved on past Flannery without a blemish. In the third minute of the match, Carter was able to pin Flannery for the victory, forcing him to the wrestleback bracket later that afternoon.
In his consolation round match, Flannery was matched up with Josh Dziewa of Iowa who came in fifth place at the Big 10 Championships after compiling a record of 26-9 on the season. Flannery could not get anything going in the match as he was overpowered by the Hawkeye, losing by technical fall by the score of 24-7. The loss to Dziewa ended the tournament for the Framingham, Mass. native.
Flannery finished off his only season as a Buffalo Bull with an overall record of 22-20 and took home a fifth place finish at the Mid-American Conference Tournament to earn his first NCAA Tournament bid as a senior. His 22 wins on the season were a team best and a career-high for the Cleveland State transfer.
The NCAA Tournament will continue in Oklahoma City on Friday and Saturday. For the Bulls, their 2013-14 season has officially come to a close.
