Wrestling Takes 7th Place At The New York State Collegiate Championship

ITHACA, NY – The University at Buffalo wrestling team took home a seventh place finish out of 27 teams at the New York State Collegiate Championship on Sunday. Tony Lock had another great showing as he earned a second place finish in the 184 pound weight class.
"After our showing today, I see that we are getting better and making improvements," stated first year head coach John Stutzman. "This is a long process and I am excited to keep moving forward and getting better."
Lock had an impressive showing on Sunday afternoon in Ithaca, NY as he finished the day with a 3-1 record. He started off his day with a technical fall victory over Tyler Gallagher of Alfred State. In his second match of the afternoon, Lock defeated Scott Bova from SUNY Oswego, 10-6. In the semifinal round, he picked up his third straight win, earning a 7-3 decision over Zack Hernandez from Columbia. In the Championship round, he was defeated by Gabriel Dean of Cornell.
Cleveland State transfer, Nick Flannery, continued to impress his new teammates on Sunday afternoon as he earned a team-high four victories en route to a third place finish. Flannery started his tournament with back-to-back victories over Chris Broccoli and Dylan Caruana before dropping his lone match of the afternoon in the semifinals. In the consolation semifinal, he downed Mark Marchetti from Army to move on to the final. Flannery earned the 4-1 decision win over Caruana to take home third place.
Angelo Malvestuto got back on track as he finished off his tournament with a 3-2 record as he earned fourth place. Following his dominating 6-2 decision victory over Chad Obzud in the consolation semifinal, Malvestuto lost the third place match to Cody Reed from Binghamton, a 4-1 decision. The #16 ranked wrestler in the 125 pound weight class, Max Soria, had a strong showing as he earned a fifth place finish with a 3-2 record. Also earning a fifth place finish was John Northrup, finishing his day with a 3-2 record.
Three other Bulls earned at least two wins on the afternoon as Justin Farmer collected a 7th place finish with a 3-2 record, Ryan Todora finished in seventh with a 3-2 record and James Benjamin won two matches, earning an eighth place finish.
The Bulls will return to the mat on Saturday, November 30 as they will travel to Albany, NY to take part in the Northeast Duals.
