BUFFALO, NY — University at Buffalo sophomore Desi Green has been selected as the Mid-American Conference Wrestler of the Week. The 17th nationally-ranked wrestler posted a 3-0 record including an 8-6 decision over sixth ranked Jason Chamberlain of Boise State at the NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals on January 9 in Cedar Falls, IA.
In the Bulls' opening dual versus ninth nationally-ranked Boise State on Saturday, Green faced sixth ranked Chamberlain. Following two periods, Green and Chamberlain entered the last period tied at 5-5. In the third period, the two would exchange escapes before Green sealed the deal with a takedown to defeat Chamberlain, 8-6.
Green contributed to the Bulls' 18-17 upset of 12th nationally-ranked Nebraska, receiving a forfeit to give the Bulls a 12-3 lead in the match to secure the Bulls' early lead.
Following Buffalo's upset of Nebraska, Green and his teammates would face seventh nationally-ranked Maryland. Despite the Bulls fall to the Terrapins, 31-7, Green earned one of the Bulls' two victories in the dual. In a repeat bout from this year's UB Open, Green would face off against Maryland's Jon Kohler. In the championship match at the UB Open, Green defeated the 2009 Edinboro Open champion, 10-7. Looking for the same result, Green would find what he was looking for as he defeated Kohler, 16-7 by major decision. Green's third-period performance made the difference in the bout as he compiled 10 points in the period.
With his strong performance at this year's National Duals, Green has yet to lose at the event. Combined with his two wins at last year's event, his record now improves to 5-0.
Prior to the Bulls' trip out to the Midwest, Green earned a 4-3 decision over Binghamton's Donnie Vinson in Buffalo's 19-16 defeat of the Bearcats.
For the season, the tri-captain holds a 21-4 overall record and 10-1 dual meet record.
Green's selection as MAC Wrestler of the Week marks the second time in his career that he has garnered such an honor.
The Bulls (7-3-1) will remain on the road as they travel to Edinboro University to face the 23rd nationally-ranked Scots on Saturday, January 16 at 7:00 pm.
