Bishop, Brown and Mason Capture Titles at NCCC Open

SANBORN, NY – Wrestling unattached, University at Buffalo senior Dan Bishop, juniorJason Brown and Jedd Mason each captured individual titles at the Niagara County Community College Open on Saturday, December 5. At the non-team scoring event, 12 additional unattached Bulls placed in their respective weight classes.
In the 125-pound weight class, the top-three spots belonged to Bishop and freshmen Justin Farmer and Sean Walton. In the championship bout, Bishop and Farmer squared off with Bishop earning a 4-0 decision to capture first place in his first outing of the 2009-10 season. Bishop opened the day with a pair of pins before defeating Walton to reach the championship bout. The senior finished with a 4-0 record while Farmer and Walton each finished with records of 3-1.
Posting a 4-0 record, Brown captured first-place in the 184-pound weight class. In the championship bout, the junior defeated Travis Booth of Mercyhurst in an 8-3 decision.
In the 285-pound weight class, the Bulls took home first and second place as Mason pinned teammate Robert Ryhal at 2:31 for the win. Ryhal entered the championship bout, winning three straight matches, including a pair of opening pins. Mason finished the day at 4-0, including back-to-back falls in his final two matches.
At 174, Pat Brady earned a second-place finish, posting a 4-1 record. Brady earned a pair of opening major decisions to start the day.
Following an opening loss by pin, redshirt-freshman Chris Conti stormed back with four straight victories to finish in third place. Posting a 4-1 record, three of his four victories came as pins. Taylor Golba finished in third place in the 133-pound weight class with a 3-1 record. After falling by pin in the opening round at 197, Tyler Peter earned a pair of victories to finish in third place.
Freshman Brian Sewalt earned fourth place in the 149-pound weight class. Sewalt captured back-to-back opening technical falls before falling to eventual champion Shay Shive of host NCCC in a close 10-8 decision. Sewalt earned a spot in the third-place bout by defeating fifth-place finisher Josh Micek. Micek recorded a 4-2 record, scoring a pair of victories by major decision and the other pair by fall.
