AMHERST, Mass. – The University at Buffalo softball team (18-22, 7-8 MAC) split their Wednesday doubleheader againt the UMass Minutewomen (13-22, 5-10 MAC) on the road. Buffalo trounced the Minutewomen in the first game, 21-4, before falling in extras, 5-4.
GAME 1
Buffalo's offense was not lacking to start the day. After a lead off walk by Reagan Terwilliger and a single by Nicole Allen, Bella Smithson hit her eighth home run of the season as the Bulls took an early 3-0 lead. UMass looked as though they'd get on the board with runners on the corners, but Buffalo retained the 3-0 lead after the first.
The Bulls added to their lead in the second starting with Ava Thelen singling up the middle. The Bulls loaded the bases as Terwilliger walked and Allen singled. A pass ball allowed the runner to advance and Thelen to score. Back-to-back walks by Smithson and Bri Delaney pushed another run across to make it a 5-0 lead. An Emily Gorman RBI single made it 6-0 as Lily Lauck grounded out to score Delaney. The Bulls led 7-0 after two innings of play.
In the bottom of the third, the Minutewomen broke through as they scored four runs on four hits. The Bulls now led by three at 7-4.
In the fourth inning, the Bulls started the inning with back-to-back doubles by Nagel and Gorman to make it an 8-4 lead. Later in the inning with the bases loaded, Ava Thelen hit a sac fly to take a 9-4 lead. The Bulls' offense carried over into the fifth inning as a sac fly by Nagel followed by a double by Gorman added two more runs to the cause, making it 11-4.
UMass had no answers on offense or defense as Buffalo piled on the runs in the sixth inning. Delaney hit her fourth homer of the season that scored Allen and Smithson, extending it 14-4. The Bulls loaded the bases with Delaney Ellis at the dish where she delivered a 2-RBI single through the left side of the infield. Now 16-4, Terwilliger hit a sac fly to make it 17-4. Again, with the bases loaded, Smithson cranked her ninth home run of the season, this time a grand slam. This marked Buffalo's second grand slam of the season, joining Nagel.
Leading 21-4, the Bulls eased their way to victory. Olivia Russ tossed a complete game with two strikeouts. Smithson went 4-for-4 with two home runs, a double, four runs scored and seven RBIs. Allen went 4-for-6 with three runs scored. Gorman also recorded four hits in four at bats, two hits going for doubles. Nagel was 3-for-4 with all three of her hits going for doubles. She's up to 41 career doubles.
GAME 2
Buffalo's offense started where they left off in the second game of the afternoon. Nicole Allen wasted no time to get into scoring position as she ripped a double down the left field line. A ground out advanced her to third as Bri Delaney drove Allen in to give Buffalo a 1-0 lead off a double of her own. Abbey Nagel got in on the festivities with an RBI single to left. The Bulls led 2-0 after the top of the first.
The Minutewomen chipped away in the bottom half of the inning on an RBI double to left. With the Bulls leading 2-1, neither team caused damage.
In the third, the Bulls loaded the bases where Lily Lauck managed to walk in a run and extend their lead to 3-1. In the fourth inning, a ground out with runners in scoring position made it a one run game as UMass made it a 3-2 game.
Both teams went down in order in the fifth as the Bulls also did so in the sixth. With UMass trailing 3-2, a two out 2-RBI double gave them a 4-3 lead after six innings of play. Buffalo managed to tie the game in the seventh. Terwilliger led the inning off with a single as Allen singled to put runners on first and second. They both advanced on a pass ball. With runners in scoring position and no outs, a hard line out by Smithson to third base marked the first out of the inning. Delaney drove Terwilliger in on a sac fly to right field. The Bulls failed to take the lead as a fly out ended the inning.
The Minutewomen threatened in the bottom of the inning as a walk and single gave them life. Back-to-back outs ended the threat as the game headed to extras.
Two quick outs were not favorable for the Bulls. Delaney Ellis earned a walk as Ava Thelen then singled to left, but a lineout to shortstop ended their hope of getting on the board.
UMass's offense didn't hesitate to get started in the bottom of the eighth. A leadoff single put with winning run on base. After a strikeout, a double to left center looked as though the game would end by a terrific relay from Terwilliger to Thelen to Smithson got the runner out at the plate. With two outs and a runner on second, a shallow liner to right field ended the game as UMass won, 5-4.
Allen, Thelen and Delaney both recorded two hits as the latter had a pair of RBIs. Genevieve Longsdorf threw a complete game.
The Bulls are back in action on Saturday on the road at Akron for a three-game series.
