Bulls Host Kent State for Tuesday MACtion

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The University at Buffalo men's basketball program (13-3, 3-1 MAC) will host the Kent State Golden Flashes (12-4, 3-1 MAC) on Tuesday evening. Tip-off from Alumni Arena will be at 6:30 p.m. on ESPN+ with Paul Peck and Tony Watson on the call. Josh Whetzel and Bob Gaughan will be on the radio call on Buffalo 1520/Rochester 1280 and on the Varsity Network App.
LAST TIME OUT
The Bulls are coming off a tough 91-80 road loss to the Ohio Bobcats on Saturday afternoon. With the loss, Buffalo suffered their first conference loss as they dropped to 13-3 overall on the season and 3-1 in MAC play.
In the loss, Angelo Brizzi led the Bulls with 18 points and a game-high four steals. Ryan Sabol added 17 points and five rebounds as Daniel Freitag scored 16 points. Derrick Talton Jr. was good for eight points, three assists, as well as a pair of three-pointers.
ABOUT THE GOLDEN FLASHES
Kent State Head Coach Rob Senderoff has spent his entire head coaching career with the Golden Flashes. In his 15-season career, he's totaled a 300- 180 (.625) record. He earned his 300th win Jan. 6th with a 96-93 win over Bowling Green.
The Golden Flashes were selected third in the 13-team league in the Mid-American Conference Preseason Poll. Delrecco Gillespie was named to the Preseason All-MAC First Team. Last season, Kent State went 24-12 overall and 11-7 in conference play. After falling in the MAC Tournament Semifinal, they advanced to the Third Round of the NIT.
The Golden Flashes are led by Gillespie who is averaging 19.3 ppg and 12.4 rpg.
Kent State is one of the best three-point shooting teams in the country as they're averaging 10.6 threes a game, good for 23rd in the NCAA.
THE BULL-ETIN BOARD
• Buffalo's next three opponents in Kent State, Miami (OH) and Akron are a combined 11-2 (.846) in conference games this season. For the rest of January, UB's opponents are 18-10 (.643).
• The second leg of the 2025-26 MAC-Sun Belt Challenge was announced on Tuesday afternoon. The Bulls will travel to Mobile, Ala. to face the South Alabama Jaguars.
• Dating back to 2004-05 on available records, this is the second time in program history the Bulls have had five 30-point performances in a season tying the 2012-13 squad. Over the last three previous seasons, Buffalo only had four such performances. Daniel Freitag has done so three times as Ryan Sabol has done it twice this season.
• The Bulls' four-game streak of 10+ made three-pointers was snapped on Saturday at Ohio as they finished with eight. On the season, Buffalo has made at least eight three-pointers in 12 of their 16 games as they're averaging 9.4 per game.
• With one made three, Ryan Sabol will move to sole possession of fifth in program history for most three-pointers made in a career with 192. He would pass Jayvon Graves (2017-21).
• In three of their four conference games, the Bulls have had three players finish with at least 15 points.
• Buffalo has made 291 free throws this season. Of their 1,278 points this season, 22.8% have come from the free throw line, that is a conference best as Kent State (21.6%), Bowling Green (21.3%) and Northern Illinois (20.9%) are the only other schools above 20%.
• UB has made 151 three-pointers so far this season. 35.4% of their points have come from three-point range, the second-best mark in the MAC behind Miami's 36.9%.
• The Bulls moved to No. 6 in the most recent College Insider Mid-Major Top-25 poll.
• Ryan Sabol and Angelo Brizzi are the only Bulls to score 10+ points in every conference game this season.
• UB has recorded 16 20-point performances this season. Last year they finished with just 16 such games.
• Daniel Freitag leads the MAC in free throw makes and attempts with 103 and 126, respectfully. He's eighth in makes and 13th in attempts in the country.
• Daniel Freitag (312) and Ryan Sabol (273) have accounted for 45.8% of Buffalo's 1,278 points on the season. They are the highest scoring duo in the MAC as UMass's Leonardo Bettiol (277) and Marcus Banks (269) make up 39.9% of the Minutemen's points.
