Second Half Rally Not Enough in Loss to Ohio on Saturday

BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women's basketball team put forth a strong second half effort, but the comeback fell short in a 721-59 loss to Ohio on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Arena.
The Bulls were led offensively by a trio of freshmen as three rookies scored in double figures, led by Aniya Rowe who scored a career-high 20 points, 16 coming in the second half. Deana Thompson tied her career-high with 14 points for the second straight game, including 7-of-10 shooting from the free throw line and Ella Corry added 12 points. Freshman forward Meg Lucas continues to dominate on the boards as she notched 12 rebounds on the day.
After trailing 24-8 early in the second quarter the Bulls began to chip away as Amber Howard found Lucas with a high-low pass for a layup before Corry sliced to the basket for a layup and then later, Paula Lopez got a floater to drop before knocking down a three at the top of the key to cut the lead to nine at the 2:38 mark, but Ohio answered, scoring on back-to-back possessions to take a 33-20 lead at the half.
With five freshmen on the floor, the Bulls used an 11-0 run, capped by a corner triple from Corry and back-to-back buckets from Rowe, to cut the lead to six and force an Ohio timeout at the 6:27 mark. Buffalo would then extend the run to 15-2 as Rowe blew by her defender for a layup and Thompson went into attack mode, getting to the charity stripe and converting, to pull UB within four at the media timeout. Rowe then scored again to cut the lead to two, but Ohio closed the quarter on a 9-0 run to take a 51-38 lead at the end of the third.
Thompson sliced to the basket for a layup on UB's first possession of the fourth quarter before Corry knocked down a midrange jumper through contact and Thompson drilled a kick out three on the wing to pull UB within eight at the 6:59 mark. Later, Lucas skied up for an offensive rebound putback plus the foul, but the Bobcats answered with a second chance bucket at the other end to maintain a nine-point lead at the final media timeout. Rowe continued to stay aggressive as she scored on three straight possessions in the final minutes of play, but the rally fell short as the Bobcats were able to seal the game at the free throw line.
Buffalo won the battle of the boards, outrebounding Ohio 37-29, while also recording 21 fastbreak points which is the second-most UB has scored in transition this season and held Ohio to just four made three-pointers, which is six under their season average, but the Bobcats had the advantage in the paint, scoring 42 points inside while adding 12 points off UB miscues.
Up next, Buffalo travels to Muncie for a clash with the Ball State Cardinals on Wednesday, January 14 at 6:30pm.
