MUNCIE, IN – The University at Buffalo women's basketball team dropped a midweek conference game at Ball State on Wednesday night at Worthen Arena.
Redshirt freshman guard Aniya Rowe led the Bulls in scoring for the seventh time this season, setting a new career-high with 24 points on a career-best nine made field goals. Sophomore Amber Howard, junior Janyah Bohanon and freshman Ella Corry added nine points each.
It was a fast-paced affair in the early going as the teams traded baskets for much of the opening five minutes of play and the hosts would maintain a 13-10 lead at the first media timeout. Ball State extended their lead out of the break before Corry and Rowe knocked down a pair of jumpers to pull UB within four, but the Cardinals closed the quarter on a 6-0 run to take a 10-point lead at the end of the first.
Ball State hit a triple on each of their first three possessions to start the second quarter and would go on to outscore UB 22-9 to take a 44-23 lead at the half.
Corry gave the Bulls their first field goal of the third quarter and later, Bohanon kicked it out to Howard for a midrange jumper and Rowe drove by her defender for a bucket plus the foul, but the hosts answered with a 6-0 run. Rowe continued to attack with her second layup through contact and then later, Diann Jackson knocked down a midrange jumper and Rowe drained a long two, but the Cardinals had an answer at the other end as they led 71-44 at the end of the third.
UB was held without a field goal for the first four minutes of the fourth quarter before Bohanon knocked down a jumper in the paint and Rowe drained a three on the wing as the Bulls scored a game-best 19 points in the final frame.
Ball State shot 57% from the floor and 47% from beyond the arc while also winning the rebound and points in the paint battle. Buffalo scored 24 points inside on the night.
Up next, Buffalo returns home to host conference-newcomer Massachusetts on Saturday, January 17 2pm.
