Bulls Start Strong, Set Eyes on Championship Matches at Navy Invitational

ANNAPOLIS, MD – The University at Buffalo women's tennis team got off to a great start at the Navy Invitational. The Bulls are in the championship match in all three doubles flights and in singles action, it will be an all-UB final in Flights A and C, and UB also has a player in the final in Flight B.
The Bulls got off to a great start on Friday, winning 10 of 11 matches on the day. In singles, Esmee Andresen cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 opening win over Howard and Maria Glowacka also looked great in a 6-1, 6-2 victory over George Washington in Flight A. In Flight B, Julia Laspro defeated UNC Wilmington 6-3, 6-1 and Sarah Hartel cruised to a 6-2, 6-2 win over Howard. In Flight C, Blanca Berges overcame a dropped second set for a hard-fought 6-2, 2-6, 10-2 victory over Villanova, Deanne Choo opened with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Seton Hall and Sofia Zagumennova also defeated Seton Hall by a score of 6-3, 6-0 and Liv Roestel battled back from a dropped first set to defeat Villanova 5-7, 6-1, 10-4 in Flight D.
In doubles action, Andresen and Glowacka defeated Seton Hall 6-1 in the quarterfinals of Flight A. In Flight B, Choo and Hartel defeated Villanova 6-4 and Laspro and Zagumennova cruised to a 6-1 victory over Navy in Flight C.
On Saturday, UB continued their solid doubles play with all three pairings advancing to the finals of their respective flights as, Andresen and Glowacka defeated the hosts 6-2 in Flight A, Choo and Hartel picked up a 6-4 victory in Flight B and Laspro and Zagumennova continued their strong play with a 6-2 win over Seton Hall in Flight C.
In singles, Andresen and Glowacka both advanced to the semifinals due to injury retirements and then took advantage, as Andresen won 6-1, 6-2 and Glowacka picked up a 6-4, 6-3 victory to make it an all-UB final. In Flight B, Hartel won her first match of the day 6-3, 6-3 and then won her semifinal match to advance to the championship match. Berges and Choo picked up quarterfinal wins to set up an all-UB semifinal where Choo won a three-set thriller 7-6, 3-6, 10-6. Zagumennova also won a pair of matches to set up a championship matchup with her teammate.
Championship matches begin at 9am on Sunday.
