KENT, Ohio – The University at Buffalo softball team (10-27, 5-11 MAC) split their midweek doubleheader at Kent State (8-32, 1-15 MAC) on Wednesday afternoon. The Golden Flashes took game one, 11-4, as the Bulls won the second game, 7-4.
GAME 1
The Golden Flashes' offense was too much for the Bulls to handle as they scored 11 runs on 13 hits and 3 walks.
The Bulls took a 1-0 lead in the second inning, but a 2-run home run in the bottom half of the inning gave the Golden Flashes the lead. Trailing 2-1 in the fourth inning, Buffalo regained the lead as they scored a pair of runs to take a 3-2 lead. Kent State responded with two runs of their own to take a 4-3 lead.
In the fifth inning, Buffalo tied the game on a ground out, but that's all the offense could do in the first game. The Golden Flashes outscored the Bulls, 7-0 in the fifth and sixth innings.
GAME 2
The Bulls bounced back in the second game as they scored 7 runs on 9 hits and 5 Kent State errors.
The Bulls grabbed the early lead in the first as Avelyn Van Heyst hit the ball to third base and forced the error to score Abbey Nagel. In the second inning, Ardyn Hopf scored as Reagan Terwilliger reached base on an error by the third baseman.
The game remained 2-0 until the fifth inning when the Bulls scored 3 runs. Van Heyst hit a sacrifice fly to center that scored Nagel. With the bases loaded, Ava Thelen reached on a fielder's choice, but two runs came around to score on a pair of Kent State errors.
Leading 5-0 in the bottom of the fifth, Kent State got on the board on a 2-run homer.
In the top of the seventh, Thelen gave the Bulls some insurance runs with her first career home run that scored Hopf. Kent State managed to score a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh, but the Bulls got out of the inning to take the game, 7-4.
Genevieve Longsdorf went the distance in the circle for the Bulls. Nagel went 3-for-4 from the plate with a pair of runs scored as both Isabella Smithson and Thelen had 2 hits each.
The Bulls are back in action on Saturday as they host the Toledo Rockets for a three-game series.
