Bulls Come Away with Win Over Loyola-Chicago at Marshall March Madness Tournament

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The University at Buffalo softball team (3-16, 0-0 MAC) wrapped up the main portion of their non-conference schedule Sunday at the Marshall March Madness Tournament. Over the weekend, the Bulls came away with just one win against the Loyola-Chicago Ramblers.
GAME 3 VS. LOYOLA-CHICAGO
The Buffalo offense clicked right from the start as they took a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Mia Mitchell started the game with a leadoff double then advanced to third on a wild pitch. Emily Gorman hit a ground ball to second that scored Mitchell for the early 1-0 lead. With the bases empty, Abbey Nagel reached first on a throwing error by the shortstop. Lily Lauck walked to put runners on first and second. Isabella Smithson singled to right field that scored Nagel from second to put the Bulls up, 2-0.
The momentum carried over into the second inning as Reagan Terwilliger scored on an RBI single by Gorman to extend the lead to 3-0.
The game remained 3-0 through four innings of action but the Bulls added another run in the fifth. Nagel reached first on a walk, but Ardyn Hopf his a double to left to put runners in scoring position. Smithson then hit sacrifice fly to center to score Nagel and make it a 4-0 lead.
Emily Watters through 5 shutout innings allowing 6 hits and 2 walks while recording 4 strikeouts.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Ramblers scored a pair of runs with a solo home run and an RBI double. Genevieve Longsdorf shut the door on the Ramblers as she recorded the 4-out save.
GAME 4 AT MARSHALL
Buffalo's offense exploded early in the fourth game of the tournament. The Bulls scored 4 total runs in the first two innings. Lily Lauck got the day started as she hit an infield single that scored Emily Gorman. In the second inning, Mia Mitchell hit a triple to right center that scored Reagan Terwilliger and Talynn Williams to make it a 3-0 lead. Gorman followed that up with an RBI single to score Mitchell.
Leading 4-0 in the bottom of the third, the Thundering Herd cut into Buffalo's lead with a 2-run home run.
Marshall's offense carried over into the fourth inning as they scored 3 runs to take a 5-4 lead. Buffalo didn't answer the rest of the way as the Thundering Herd scored 4 more runs and took the game, 9-4.
GAME 5 VS. VALPARAISO
It was a low scoring affair on Sunday against the Valparaiso Beacons. Valparaiso got on the board in the top of the first inning with a 2-run home run to left. The Bulls recorded 2 hits in the bottom half of the inning courtesy of Mia Mitchell and Abbey Nagel, but did not cut into Valparaiso's lead.
Mitchell hit her second double of the game in the third inning which scored Reagan Terwilliger to make it a 2-1 Beacons lead.
Neither team got the offense in gear the rest of the game as Valparaiso took the contest, 2-1.
The Bulls are back in action on Friday at 3 p.m. at Nan Harvey Field as they host the Bowling Green Falcons for the opening weekend of conference play. The series will wrap up on Saturday with a double header starting at 1 p.m.
