BUFFALO, N.Y. – The University at Buffalo softball team (3-17, 0-1 MAC) fell to the Bowling Green Falcons (6-15, 1-0 MAC) on Friday afternoon in six innings, 11-3. The Falcons utilized a 5-run fifth inning to pull away for the MAC opener.
The Falcons got on the board in the top of the first with runners on the corners. Bowling Green was aggressive on the base paths and went for the double steal as they forced the Bulls to make the throw to second base which allowed the Falcons to steal home.
In the bottom of the first with two outs and Reagan Terwilliger on second base, Abbey Nagel walked to put runners on first and second. Lily Lauck continued the inning with a walk of her own to load the bases. Isabella Smithson capitalized on the situation as she drove home Terwilliger and Nagel to put the Bulls in front, 2-1.
Bowling Green answered in the top of the second as they took a 3-2 lead after a 2-run home run.
The Bulls were held scoreless for the next four innings as they only had one hit.
Bowling Green had an explosive fifth inning as they scored 5 runs on 4 hits and an error to take an 8-2 lead. Their offense carried over into the top of the sixth as they added 3 runs on a pair of hits.
Down 11-2 in the bottom of the sixth, the Bulls managed to get on base. Avelyn Van Heyst hit a single to left center to start the inning. Abbey Nagel then hit a hard grounder that the second baseman couldn't handle to put runners on first and second. Lily Lauck then ripped an RBI single up the middle to score Van Heyst. Forcing a pitching change, Smithson then popped up to second base. The game ended on an unconventional double play as Talynn Williams pooped out in foul territory to the third baseman who then threw the ball to first base to tag out Lauck.
The Falcons finished the day with 9 hits to Buffalo's 4.
The Bulls and Falcons will continue their weekend series tomorrow at 1 p.m.
