BUFFALO, N.Y. – The University at Buffalo softball team (5-17, 2-1 MAC) swept the Saturday doubleheader against the Bowling Green Falcons (6-17, 1-2 MAC) at Nan Harvey Field. The Bulls won the first game, 4-3, courtesy of a Talynn Williams walk-off single. Game two was an absolute slug fest as both teams combined for 16 runs and 22 hits. The Bulls came away with the 10-6 win.
GAME 1
The Bulls got off to a fast start against the Falcons as they scored on a double steal in the first inning. In the second inning, Talynn Williams led the inning off with a walk. Avelyn Van Heyst then reached base on an infield single to shortstop, but forced an errant throw which scored Williams and moved Van Heyst to second. Mia Mitchell ripped a single up the middle that scored Van Heyst to give the Bulls a 3-0 lead.
The game remained 3-0 until the Falcons got on the board in the top of the sixth on an RBI single. The Bulls didn't add any insurance runs in the bottom half of the inning as they led 3-1 headed into the top of the seventh. The Falcons loaded the bases in the seventh on a bunt and a pair of walks. A 2-RBI single to center tied the game 3.
Van Heyst led the bottom of the seventh off with a single to right. Reagan Terwilliger reached first on a bunt that put runners on first and second. Emily Gorman ripped a single to left and with a full head of steam, Van Heyst rounded third headed for home. The leftfielder threw a frozen rope to home to just beat Van Heyst for the out and hold off the Bulls' walk-off opportunity.
Buffalo held off the Falcons in the top of the eighth with another chance at a walk-off. Lily Lauck led the inning off with a walk and was pinch ran for by Ava Thelen. Isabella Smithson put down a sacrifice bunt to move over Thelen in to scoring position. Miranda Zipp then ran for Thelen. Ardyn Hopf singled to left which moved Zipp just 60-feet away from taking home the victory. Williams closed the game with an RBI single to right center for the walk-off victory.
Olivia Russ went the distance as she struck out 9 Falcons on the day.
GAME 2
After not allowing any runs in the top of the first, the Bulls took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the inning after Lily Lauck ripped a base clearing double to left center. Scoring was Mia Mitchell, Emily Gorman and Abbey Nagel. They added to their total in the second as Groman hit an RBI single to left center that scored Avelyn Van Heyst from second base.
With the Bulls leading 4-0 in the top of the third, the Falcons cut into the lead. Bowling Green scored a pair of runs on an error as the Bulls tried to turn a double play. A single up the middle cut Buffalo's lead to 4-3.
Buffalo answered in the bottom of the third as they added 5 runs to their cause. After the first two batters of the inning failed to reach base, the Bulls went on a tear. Talynn Williams started it off with a single to left which Van Heyst followed up with a single of her own. Reagan Terwilliger walked to load the bases. Mitchell hit a hard grounder to the left side, but the first baseman dropped the ball to extend the inning and give the Bulls a run. Gorman capitalized on the situation as she hit a 2-RBI single to center to make it a 7-3 Buffalo lead. Nagel hit an RBI single to left that scored Mitchell to extend the lead to 8-3. Lauck wrapped up the scoring with a single to left that scored Gorman.
Neither side scored until the top of the fifth when Bowling Green scored 3 runs on 3 hits. The Falcons cut Buffalo's lead to 9-6.
It was a quiet affair the rest of the way as the Bulls added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth as Terwilliger drilled a slap hit triple to the left center wall that scored Van Heyst.
Olivia Russ closed out the game as she recorded 2 strikeouts in the final inning.
Lauck led the Bulls with 4 RBIs and 2 hits as Gorman added 3 RBIs on 2 hits. Van Heyst and Terwilliger each had 2 hits in the game.
