MUNCIE, IN – The University at Buffalo women's basketball team (23-6, 12-5 MAC) fell 72-60 at Ball State on Wednesday night in the final road contest of the regular season.
The Bulls were led offensively by senior Jordyn Beaty, who recorded a career-high 17 points to go with six rebounds. Sophomore Kirsten Lewis-Williams scored 14 points and Chellia Watson also scored in double figures with 12 points. Senior Noelani Cornfield just missed out on double figures with seven points while tying a career-high with 10 assists.
After a sluggish start to the game for both teams, Buffalo executed in transition as Cornfield hit Beaty for a fastbreak layup before Lewis-Williams got a midrange jumper to drop and Watson drilled a triple to give UB a 9-7 lead at the first media timeout. Later, Cornfield skipped a pass across court to Sitota Gines for a corner three and the Bulls clamped down on defense, holding the Cardinals without a field goal for the final five minutes of the quarter as they led 16-11 at the end of the first.
Beaty continued to stay aggressive as she scored on a pair of layups early in the second quarter to put the Bulls up by seven, but the hosts responded with a 7-2 run to cut the lead to two at the media timeout. Ball State then tied the game at 25 with 90 seconds remaining before Watson hit Ariana Seawell on the block for a layup to give the Bulls a 27-25 lead at the half.
Ball State used a 6-0 run early in the third quarter to take a four-point lead and the offensive lull continued for UB as the Cardinals led 40-35 at the media timeout. Watson got to the rim for a bucket to cut the lead to four, but the hosts answered with an 11-3 run to go up by double digits at the end of the third.
Beaty looked to give the Bulls a spark as she scored on back-to-back possessions early in the fourth quarter. Buffalo continued to fight as they used an 8-0 run, capped by a Beaty hook shot in the end and a dime from Cornfield to Lewis-Williams for a layup, to pull within 15 at the 3:16 mark. Watson then got hot as she went on a 5-0 run by herself, capped by a spot up triple, to pull UB within 14 with just over one minute remaining but the late rally wasn't enough as the comeback fell short.
Buffalo scored 30 points inside and forced 20 turnovers, which they turned into 16 points, but they were turnover prone themselves as they committed 16 on the night and the hosts capitalized, scoring 15 points off those miscues while also owning a 35-27 edge on the glass.
Up next, Buffalo will close out the regular season at home as they welcome Western Michigan to Alumni Arena for Senior Day on Saturday, March 8 at 2pm.
