BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women's basketball team (23-5, 12-4 MAC) dominated from start to finish in a 71-54 wire-to-wire win over Eastern Michigan on Saturday.
It was a special day at Alumni Arena as UB great Kourtney Brown saw her #10 jersey added to the arena's Wall of Fame in a special halftime ceremony.
Four Bulls scored in double figures led by Chellia Watson who had a game-high 21 points, on an efficient 10-of-13 shooting from the floor, to go with six rebounds. Sophomore Kirsten Lewis-Williams scored 13 points to go with five rebounds and four assists, Noelani Cornfield recorded 11 points and dished out seven dimes and Jordyn Beaty added 10 points.
The Bulls opened the game on a 12-2 run, including two straight back door layups followed by a Watson triple. The Bulls continued to attack as Cornfield blew by her defender for a pair of layups off glass and Lewis-Williams attacked for a pair of buckets of her own to give the Bulls a 20-12 lead at the end of the first.
Buffalo picked up where they left off to start the second as Cornfield sliced to the basket for a layup before Lewis-Williams and Beaty went to work and then UB turned defense into offense as they came up with a pair of steals and capitalized with an 8-0 run as they led 34-17 at the media timeout. Later, Terah Harness grabbed her own rebound and raced up court for a fastbreak layup, Paula Lopez drilled a corner triple and Watson got out in transition for a pair of layups to cap a 7-0 run and give the Bulls a 45-23 lead at the half.
Beaty and Watson scored on UB's two possessions of the third quarter and later Sitota Gines came up with a steal and found Watson for a fastbreak layup plus the foul to give the Bulls a 53-30 lead at the media timeout. The teams would trade baskets and stops the rest of the quarter as the Bulls maintained a 20-point lead at the end of the third.
Lewis-Williams and Cornfield scored on the first two possessions of the fourth quarter and later, Cornfield drained a mid-range jumper in the paint as the Bulls maintained a 66-49 lead at the media timeout. Watson continued to attack as she nailed a jumper in the paint before Mallory Daly skied up for a rebound and raced up court for a transition layup off glass to put UB up 71-51 with 90 seconds remaining and that was more than enough to secure the victory.
Buffalo dominated the paint, outscoring the Eagles 56-12 inside. The 56 points were the most scored in the paint in a league game this season. The Bulls continue to turn defense into offense as they forced 18 turnovers, scoring 20 points off those miscues. UB was extremely efficient on the offensive end of the floor as they shot a blistering 59% from the floor and had 19 assists on 30 made field goals, while also excelling in transition, recording 20 fastbreak points.
Up next, Buffalo will embark on their final road trip of the regular season as they travel to Muncie for a rematch with the Ball State Cardinals on Wednesday, March 5 at 6:30pm.
