CONWAY, SC – The University at Buffalo women's basketball team (19-4, 8-3 MAC) fell at Coastal Carolina in the second game of the MAC-SBC Challenge at the HTC Center on Saturday afternoon.
The Bulls were led offensively by Chellia Watson who scored a game-high 21 points to go with eight rebounds and Kirsten Lewis-Williams who flirted with a triple-double, recording 18 points, eight rebounds and five assists.
Coastal scored on their first possession of the game, but Watson responded with a pair of midrange jumpers to tie the game at the first media timeout. Lewis-Williams got going with an offensive rebound putback and Sitota Gines followed with a pair of free throws to give UB an 8-4 lead with just over two minutes to go. Later, Lewis-Williams got a jumper to drop before Watson hit a rim-running Ariana Seawell for a transition layup in the final seconds to give Buffalo a 12-6 lead at the end of the first.
After a slow start to the second quarter, Lewis-Williams and Jordyn Beaty scored on a pair of jumpers, but the hosts answered with back-to-back triples to take a 19-16 lead before Watson stopped the run with a crafty and-one bucket to pull the Bulls within one at the media timeout. Lewis-Williams continued to attack as she drove baseline and finished a reverse layup off glass and Watson got a turnaround fadeaway jumper to fall to pull within two, but the Chanticleers scored at the buzzer to take a 30-26 lead at the half.
Coastal opened the second half with a 9-0 run to take a double-digit lead and they maintained a 41-29 lead at the media timeout. Watson found Terah Harness for a fastbreak layup and Seawell got to the charity stripe on back-to-back possessions, but the hosts scored in the final seconds for the second straight quarter to go up 51-37 at the end of the third.
The Bulls used a 6-0 run, jump-started by a Watson triple from the top of the key, to pull within 10 early in the fourth quarter. Lewis-Williams stayed in attack mode as she scored four straight points to cut the deficit to single digits. Later, Watson drilled a deep three from the top of the key, Lewis-Williams went up and around her defender for a tough layup through contact and Harness drilled a pair of threes two minutes apart to cut the lead to four with 1:36 remaining but the Bulls would get no closer.
The Bulls held a 34-36 advantage in the paint and forced 22 Coastal turnovers off which they scored 16 points, while adding 15 fastbreak points, but the Chanticleers forced 13 UB turnovers and scored 20 points off those miscues while also owing a 43-28 advantage on the glass, including 10 offensive rebounds which they turned into 16 second chance points.
Up next, Buffalo will have a week off before traveling to Athens, Ohio for a clash with the Ohio Bobcats on Saturday, February 15. Tipoff from the Convocation Center is set for 1pm.
